Golf is making its comeback across Canada, and there’s a lot of pent-up interest from those who’ve been stuck indoors waiting for restrictions to be lifted. The biggest question Canadian golfers face now is where to play. The immediate response from many was anywhere!
But as we deal with the new normal, finding interesting places to play will be essential. One thing is clear—great golf in Canada doesn’t have to be overly expensive. With that in mind, we have devised a list of great green fee values across Canada that are worth seeking out.
From British Columbia to Newfoundland
Fairview Mountain (Oliver, BC: $82 and $60 peak):
Arguably the best design by architect Les Furber, this course, located in the interior of British Columbia, is surrounded by mountains and vineyards, presenting an incredible setting for golf. Truly unforgettable scenery is the backdrop to great golf.
Wolf Creek (Ponoka, Alberta: $85 peak with dynamic pricing):
Created by Rod Whitman, the designer behind Cabot Links, there’s 36 great holes at this facility, located south of Edmonton. The original course was built as an homage to Scottish links, while the second 18 offers blowout bunkers and wide fairways.
Dakota Dunes (Whitecap, Sask: $70 peak rate):
One of the best courses in Saskatchewan, Dakota Dunes meanders over some choppy dunes, creating a unique playing experience you are unlikely to find anywhere else in Canada. Often rated among the top public courses in Canada, Dakota Dunes is instantly memorable.
Falcon Lake (Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba: $55 peak rate):
Located 90 minutes east of Winnipeg, this has long been heralded as one of the hidden gems in Canada, despite being set within view of the nearby highway. Easily accessed, with stunning scenery and tree-lined holes, Falcon Lake presents a great value for those seeking something a little off the beaten path.
Tarandowah (Avon, Ont.: $55 peak rate):
Designed by Martin Hawtree, an architect known for his work on British Open courses, Tarandowah is full of devilish bunkers, long fescue and the realistic links golf experience you can have without heading overseas.
Chateau Montebello (Montebello, Que.: $90 peak rate):
A historic golf course created by the legendary Stanley Thompson, Montebello is built on rugged land that offers plenty of elevation change. Located between Ottawa and Montreal, this is a great design that can be played for less than $100, something that’s not common these days.
Northumberland Links (Pugwash, NS: $65 peak rate):
Not a true links, but it does offer several holes that play alongside the ocean. And at a peak rate of $65, who is complaining, exactly? Singer Anne Murray could often be found playing on the fairways of Northumberland, a warm and welcoming club that gives you ocean views without hitting your wallet.
Humber Valley (Corner Brook, Newfoundland):
One of the most majestic golf courses in Canada, the only reason Humber Valley isn’t more recognized is because of its location—about a half hour outside Corner Brook. Designed by Doug Carrick, the 10th hole makes it worth the price of admission on its own. A massive tee shot plunges 80 feet to a fairway below, leaving the ball hanging in the air for what seems like an eternity.
