Every year Canadians shake the winter doldrums off their golf game, and head out to the fairways. Those early weeks in the season as we whip the rust off our games can be a challenge. With that in mind, each week in April, Golf Town Instructor Franco Sirianni will share a tip on how to prepare for the season.
Consider this your Golf Town Spring Tune-up.
What’s right for you: Draw or Fade
On the practice tee
One of the most common questions Franco receives is how a player can learn to hit a draw or a fade. These two results are the building blocks of any golf swing, and there are some simple techniques to consider that have proven helpful to players of all levels, even the beginner, who would benefit from understanding the basic stance and set up.
The Process
There are several ways to learn to hit a draw or a fade, but Franco finds the best way is to focus on simple, straight-forward instructions.
Hitting a Draw (Right-handed player)
A draw is a shot that starts right of a target and moves to the left.
Start with the club face square to the target.
Position your stance aiming 20 degrees to the right of your target.
Your stance will appear closed to the target, with your right foot about 2 inches offset.
Your take away will feel rounder and flat. Be sure to swing towards the right through impact. By having the club face square, this will create a shot that moves from right to left.
Hitting a Fade (Right-handed player)
A fade is a shot that starts left of a target and fades to the right.
Start with the club face square to the target.
Position your stance aiming to the left of the target by at least 20 degrees.
This will look like that your left foot in your stance is 2 inches offset.
Your take away will feel as though it’s away from your body and steeper. You are going to swing towards the left through impact, but the square club face will create the fade.
Note: For a left-handed golfer (and in Canada that’s very common), everything above is simply reversed.
