With a focus on squaring the clubface, Titleist launches new SM8 Vokey wedges

“We ask so much of our wedges,” says Jeremy Stone, Director of Marketing for Vokey Wedges. “They have to be hit from a variety of distances and pull off a lot of different shots. No other club is asked to do that.”

With that in mind, the goal of every generation of Vokey wedges—developed under the watchful eye of Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Bob Vokey—is to simply help golfers get the ball closer to the hole, regardless of whether it is from 8 or 80 yards. And with a new concept around center of gravity, Vokey’s SM8 wedges do just that, says Stone.

“It means the club will get back to square more easily and you’ll hit your target window more often,” he explains.

Key technologies

Center of gravity

Far too often, especially when hitting shots with a high-lofted wedge, shots simply slide underneath the ball. Titleist says that’s because the way wedges have evolved, some players were adding dynamic loft to their shots. By “hovering” the center of gravity and pushing it forward, the rotation of the blade doesn’t lag behind.

“That really reduces the tendency for the club to slide under the ball,” he says. While past Vokeys worked for 90% of Titleist’s tour staff, the company found 10% were still using wedges from two generations ago. The goal is with this new technical change, the SM8 wedges will be utilized even more widely.

Refined Sole Grind Options

There are six grinds developed through Titleist’s tour pros—F, S, M, K, L and D—allowing all golfers to find a set of wedges that precisely fit their swing and course conditions. Titleist is emphasizing that a majority of players still don’t have their wedges fit—something you should consider at Golf Town if you want to get the most out of the variations offered. For example, Stone says players should consider a higher-bounce sand wedge, and pair it with a lower bounce lob wedge, allowing players to cover everything from firm turf to soft bunker conditions. This is a concept used by both Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

Spin Milled Grooves

Meticulously engineered and cut to the edge to maximize spin and shot control, each groove on every head is individually cut and 100% inspected for conformity to the rules of golf. Micro-grooves are individually cut in between grooves, which maximize spin on partial shots and a proprietary heat treatment is applied to the impact area to double the durability of the groove without impacting feel.

Who are they for?

There’s a grind and bounce for every swing, says Stone, adding the wedges became the most quickly adopted in Titleist history when they first appeared at the RSM Classic in the fall. More will show up as 2020’s first full field events kick off. But one thing is clear—with all the variety in the line, a fitting at Golf Town is going to help you dial in your wedges and improve your scoring.
