Wilson launches new DUO Soft+, DUO Optix balls

There are two keys to most recent golf ball launches. The first element is they must feel soft. Soft on putts—soft on chips, but long when you smash one with a driver. The other key is aesthetics. Companies—even those that have been reluctant to alter the tried-and-tested notion that white is the ideal look for a golf ball—have started offering variations in colour. Wilson is making a pitch at both markets, first with its Duo Soft+ golf ball, which it says is the softest and longest two-piece ball on the market, and tackling the colour story with its Duo Optix ball.

Here’s what you need to know about both models:

DUO Soft+

Soft

Soft feels better on putts and chips—and those key approach shots into the green. Wilson says the DUO Soft+ is the lowest compression ball based on testing it undertook last spring. How soft? At 35 compression, this is a very soft golf ball indeed.

Distance

The DUO Soft+ was designed to fly longer. The key to most golf balls is the separation of feel around the green, where you want it to be softer on scoring shots, but longer off the tee. Wilson says it has done just that, generating two miles an hour of ball speed off driver strikes at 90 miles per hour. That equals more yardage, which is a key for the mid-handicappers this ball is aimed at.

Who is it for?

This is aimed at the value-conscious golfer who wants the best a two-piece ball can offer. If you’re looking for more distance from the tee, but still a great feel around the green, the DUO Soft+ is worth considering.

DUO Optix

Colour

If you’re considering the DUO Optix, you’re looking to stand out. And you will, with balls in matte red, green and yellow.

Distance

This is a ball with a smaller core highly resilient polybutadiene core designed to travel straight and far.

Who is it for?

This is a value-based golf ball in bold and bright colours. If you’re looking to stand out from your playing partners, or think white is just dull, this ball could suit your game.
