What you need to know: Cobra SPEEDZONE

Whether you’re a low-single digit handicap or an older golfer trying to get it out there a bit farther, you have one thing in common—the desire to find some extra speed and gain some yards. That’s the objective of Cobra’s new SPEEDZONE drivers, fairways, irons and hybrids, available NOW—add more speed and thus more distance

With two new drivers, irons that come in variable and one-length, as well as fairway woods and hybrids, SPEEDZONE focuses every element on offering greater distance. The launch in Florida, featuring Cobra star Rickie Fowler, used a race car as an example—when you’re involved in high-level racing, every element of the car is designed for speed. And that’s exactly what Cobra says its done with SPEEDZONE.

Here’s a closer look at the technology that went into the design of the lineup:

SPEEDZONE Driver

Cobra says it has utilized six “zones” designed to create more speed in its two SPEEDZONE drivers: KING SPEEDZONE and the KING SPEEDZONE XTREME.

CNC Infinity Milled Face

Cobra has focused a lot of its messaging in recent years about providing an exacting milled face on its drivers. In the latest incarnation, they have expanded the milled area by 95%, which allows it to offer great control over the thickness of its drivers. Quality control is also key—every face is inspected to ensure this larger sweet spot is consistent.

SPEEDZONE VS XTREME

The two models—SPEEDZONE and XTREME offer two different looks. The SPEEDZONE is a more traditional head shape, while the SPEEDZONE EXTREME is aimed at offering more forgiveness.

Titanium T-Bar Speed Chasis

A common theme in drivers in recent years is technology that maintains the structure of the driver and increases the energy on every hit. That’s the case with SPEEDZONE, which uses a T-Bar Speed Chasis that supports the structure of the driver, while allowing discretionary weight to be moved low-and-back to create a more forgiving product.

360 Carbon Wrap Crown

Once again, weight is a key to this design, and the new carbon crown, which makes up half the driver’s body, is 25 grams lighter than previous versions.

Low CG

A lower center of gravity helps with higher launch and lower spin—the key to longer drives. Cobra says 69 grams of discretionary weight are positioned low on the SPEEDZONE, versus 40 in its predecessor F9 driver

Aerodynamics

Another much-discussed element of drivers across the market in recent years, the company says the design reduces drag and increases speed.

Stability Zone

A feature aimed at making SPEEDZONE more forgiving, this technology moves weight away from the center and more towards the perimeter, making the driver more stable.

Who are they for?

If you’re a lower handicap player looking to work the ball, SPEEDZONE is the choice for you. Looking for distance and more forgiveness on off-center strikes, then the EXTREME is going to be the version you’ll consider.

SPEEDZONE Irons

Ultra-low center of gravity and a carbon fiber topline to deliver more speed—that’s what you get from Cobra’s SPEEDZONE irons. Once again, using the race car analogy, Cobra has considered every element when putting together these irons, all with the focus on offering the fastest speed possible and making it easier for you to swing the irons more quickly.

“When designing irons, there is a delicate balance of delivering playability, feel and distance, and the SPEEDZONE irons in both traditional and one-length make-ups provide all three attributes in spades,” said Corba vice-president Tom Olsavsky.

Carbon Fiber

Cobra calls this the “Light Zone.” By using carbon fiber, which is 40% lighter than steel, discretionary weight is moved to the bottom of the club, increasing speed and launch.

Wider body

The wide body on the SPEEDBACK irons increases forgiveness and increases stability. If you’re swinging fast, you want to ensure you’re hitting the sweet spot as often as possible.

Distance

Once again, Cobra includes its PWRSHELL technology in the irons to increase speed and provide a higher launch.

Forged

The irons come with a forged face for a soft feel and great sound. There’s also a medallion system built into the irons to dampen vibrations.

Spin

With 100% milled CNC spin technology, V-grooves reduce spin on long irons and improve spin on shorter scoring irons.

Two models

Once again, highlighting the irons used by Bryson DeChambeau, one of Cobra’s key professionals, the SPEEDZONE irons come in variable and one-length offerings.

Who are they for?

The traditional model of SPEEDZONE is aimed at the golfer who wants more distance and forgiveness. One LENGTH are aimed at golfers seeking something a little different and are willing to experiment to gain consistency.

Fairways and hybrids

Following on the improvements made in the driver line of KING SPEEDZONE, Cobra has worked to create specific speed zones in its fairways and hybrids. Three new fairway woods are offered—a traditional model, a Tour version, and a Big Tour offering, as well as One LENGTH and variable length hybrids.

CNC Milled Face

Thinner and hotter—that’s the goal of the face on SPEEDZONE’s fairway woods. A CNC Milled forged face makes the fairways up to five times more precise than other manufacturers, Cobra says.

Split Rail Structure

A system that divides the front and rear of the clubs, the front rails are hollowed out to allow the thinner walls to flex, while Baffler Rail technology prevents digging. The result is increased ball speed and higher launch. The Baffler Rails also add to the stability of the club.

Carbon Fiber Crown

Offering a weight savings, the carbon fiber crown saves 10 grams of weight that is then utilized to make the fairways more forgiving.

Five settings

With three draw settings, and five loft settings, the fairways can be tuned to your swing.

Who are they for?

The KING SPEEDZONE fairways are aimed at golfers who like the look and size of a traditional fairway wood, while the Tour version is smaller and for golfers seeking to work the ball more readily. The Big Tour version is for golfers seeking a larger form factor who want to be able to get the ball in the air more readily. All three offer Cobra Connect to help you make smarter, data-driven decisions to improve your game.

  1. Nice! I play Cobra KING F7 woods and love them. Their hybrid is the best I’ve ever hit.
I look forward to trying these beauties out, with single length.
