Titleist’s latest 718 AP irons offer something new

With the ability to mix and match within sets, learn about the differences between the AP1, AP2 and AP3 to find out which is right for your game. Titleist 718 irons are available now.

As reliable and beloved as any iron in golf, Titleist’s AP2 has become a mainstay on the PGA Tour. At the same time its AP1 iron was designed for those who needed a little assistance getting the ball in the air and going in the right direction.

And now there’s a new AP variation—the AP3.

“The AP3 came out of the C16 concept program that we were working on,” says Josh Talge, Titleist’s Vice-President of Golf Club Marketing. “We want players to really think about which club is right for them, or to be able to mix and match within the sets.”

Talge says there are players who don’t like the aesthetic of the larger AP1, but need the forgiveness and stability offered in those irons. It is that player who will find a great deal to like in the AP3.

The “secret sauce” for Titleist is its use of tungsten weighting, which allows for a high moment of inertia (which adds forgiveness), but also allows the company’s designers to position the centre of gravity where they want it to keep a consistent ball flight.

“You’re getting a fast thin face,” says Talge.

One thing that’s surprised Talge and a number of Titleist employees is that the new AP iron has broad appeal, with even tour players using them in their longer irons.

“Adam Scott was one of the first to really embrace it,” Talge says. “He hit them and wanted to know everything about the iron. It kind of surprised us, but it reaffirmed that we had created a great iron.”
