Ping’s G series of drivers were a huge hit when they hit Golf Town in 2016, largely because of their incredible forgiveness. When the Ping G400 hit at the end of last summer, the buzz was the driver was faster, more accurate and came armed with improved acoustics over Ping’s previous G driver. More than a dozen players made the switch at the U.S. Open, and the enthusiasm for G400 grew from there with players like Brooke Henderson, Mackenzie Hughes, and Bubba Watson all using the driver on Tour.
Now Ping has four versions of the driver—G400, SFT, LST, and the G400 Max. Marty Jertsen, Ping’s director of product development, says there’s now a G400 to cover every swing type.
“G400 is a really great, really forgiving driver that’s done really well,” says Ping’s Jertsen. “And with the variations we are now offering, including G400 Max, I think we’ve really got a vast majority of the players covered.”

Dragonfly
Ping’s engineers utilized its Dragonfly technology to give them three times the discretionary weight to play with from the original G. What does that mean? It allowed them to make the driver more stable and more forgiving—and ultimately to allow golfers to hit more fairways than ever before. Ping says the new driver is its most forgiving yet, and in testing outperformed everything in the market when it came to finding the short grass. It is a fairway seeker.
Tungsten Back Weight
A higher-density back weight creates extreme MOI to elevate forgiveness and accuracy while allowing you to customize your swing weight.
Turbulators
Remember these from a couple of years back? They’re back and better than ever, reducing drag by 40% mid-downswing and 15% overall. That means a faster swing.
So which G400 version is right for you?
G400
In the original, with its 445 cc head, Ping found a driver that’s more forgiving than anything it had marketed previously. Players soon fell in love with its high MOI, new sound, and clean look. The original model is for the player who can benefit from the slightly smaller shape to find increases in swing speed, taking advantage of the G400’s aerodynamics for reduced drag, while still seeking to hit lots of fairways.
G400 SFT (Straight Flight)
Essentially the right G400 for the golfer who cuts or slices the ball too much. More heel-side weighting, and a lighter swing weight allow golfers to square the clubface more readily, and generate a straighter flight.
The G400 LST (Low Spin)
For the golfer who struggles with ballooning shots that get eaten up in the wind and cost valuable yardage. In the G400 LST, Ping’s engineers moved some tungsten weighting forward, to knock down some of the spin. The company says G400 LST lowers the spin by an average of 300 rpm, which means the ball will fly farther.
G400 Max
The latest driver for the G400 family, the Max is just that—a head that meets the USGA’S legal limit of 460 cc. It comes with all the benefits of the original G400—stability and forgiveness that leads to longer drives. But the larger head instills confidence in many golfers, says Jertsen, and it is the most forgiving driver Ping has ever created. Just for those seeking a very forgiving driver? Think again, says Jertsen. Ping has found some of its tour pros using it as well.
“They don’t really need the speed gains you get from the 445 cc version,” he says. “And they love how forgiving the G400 Max is.”
