TaylorMade created the first carbonwood with its Stealth driver line. To improve upon that, the company had to make a big leap forward. And it thinks it has done just that with the new Qi10 driver line. With a 16 percent gain in inertia, the measurement of forgiveness in golf clubs, the Qi10 is long and forgiving, a unique combination that has been a difficult challenge for designers. Creating a driver that found fairways isn’t a massive challenge, and making a long driver hasn’t been hard. Placing the two together is a remarkable accomplishment.
“The quest for inertia, specifically the 10,000 threshold, has been something we’ve been looking to accomplish for a long time,” says Jamey Dees, Product Manager for TaylorMade Canada. “In breaking through that, we’ve created the world’s most forgiving driver.”
What does this mean for your game? Higher moment of inertia means less head rotation when you don’t hit it in the centre of the clubface, leading to higher ball speeds and more consistent launch conditions. Through the use of carbon throughout the driver head, TaylorMade has created a driver that’s forgiving for all players.
Key Technologies
Infinity Crown
TaylorMade was one of the first manufacturers to use lightweight carbon in its clubheads, which allowed the company to move discretionary weight around the driver. In the case of the new Infinity Crown, TaylorMade has largely done away with the ledge that held the club together, allowing for more mass redistribution. That helped lead to more forgiveness. With 97 percent of the crown being covered with carbon, TaylorMade was able to make some massive gains.
Optimized Head Shape
The Qi10 features a shallower head shape that extends from the back to the front, allowing for the club to push the extreme limits of CG. Basically a higher MOI shape, this was one of the keys to breaking through the 10,000 g-cm2 barrier.
Carbon Face
The third generation with Carbon Twist Face, which increases speed on toe and heel hits and straightens those shots, the face works with the redesigned ledge to create more efficient energy transfer.
“This quest to 10K is the sum of a variety of proven TaylorMade technologies that have been integrated into a new shape in the Qi10 Max, literally giving us the most forgiving driver in TaylorMade history with the highest MOI we’ve ever achieved,” says Tomo Bystedt, Senior Director of Product Creation for TaylorMade. “On top of it, the evolution of 60X Carbon Twist Face features a new blue colour pattern and high contrast topline that works in unison with the Infinity Carbon Crown to provide a very clean and refined look at address position.”
Which One Is For Me?
Qi10
With a slightly larger address shape than the last generation of TaylorMade drivers, Qi10 offers a clean look and all of what you’ve come to expect with the main version of TM drivers—adjustability to dial in the details (spin, launch) and a clean, powerful look matched by great sound. The ideal driver for those seeking forgiveness and adjustability.
Qi10 LS
For those seeking to bring down spin (likely players with higher swing speeds), the LS model has been engineered to spin less and fly further. A classic address shape instills confidence and easy alignment for your drives.
Qi10 MAX
With maximum address size, this is an oversized driver for those seeking a great mix of speed and forgiveness. If you’re a 10 handicap, you’ll want to check this one out.
