Rickie Fowler had an idea. From the moment Fowler signed on to play TaylorMade’s TP5 ball last year, he became intrigued at the possibility of incorporating visual aids onto the ball. He tinkered with a variety of possible patterns, working alongside TaylorMade’s engineers to come up with a ball that would suit his concept. At the same time, the market for non-white golf balls is increasing significantly. The idea of creating a golf ball with visual aids was something TaylorMade was excited about pursuing.
Here’s what you need to know about the new and improved TP5Pix.
Motion triangle
This is what TaylorMade calls the pattern on Fowler’s Pix ball. The goal was to create a shape that had six sides and appeared to be a triangle, but was not too linear. A number of concepts were proposed before the team settled on the triangle.
“We really wanted something that wasn’t just white, round and sits on the ground,” jokes Fox. “This really presented an opportunity to incorporate visuals onto the ball.”
Unique logo placement
The triangles line up in a particular way that was appealing to Fowler, something TaylorMade calls “Clear Path Alignment.” While it doesn’t have lines as such, it is easy to determine if you’re making a clean putting stroke towards your target from the motion and placement of the shapes.
Urethane
Pix is made of the same urethane that has come to define TP5. That makes it soft when struck on putts or chips, and durable when hit with longer clubs.
Five Layers
Pix is a TP5 ball, which means it is a five-layer ball that includes the Tri-Fast core, and a new speed layer system with HFM. HFM is a new higher modulus material that improves energy transfer through the ball, which leads to more speed. It also adds additional load onto the driver face, producing more speed in your longer clubs.
Who is it for?
TP5 is a premium ball for those seeking the best distance with longer clubs, and the most impressive feel with shorter clubs. Now if you’re willing to try something other than a plain white ball—and there are several options on the market—this is surely one to consider. The graphics are intriguing without being overwhelming and the ball as a distinctive look that will set you apart in your foursome.
