TaylorMade reintroduces its Mini Driver

The name says it all – Mini Driver.

TaylorMade first released a version of the Mini Driver in 2000. Then it wasn’t mini—at 300 cc it was the company’s main driver. Now 21 years later, some tour players have put it in their bag and TaylorMade has launched the 300 Mini Driver, with a 307 cubic centimeter head that offers a great mix of distance, forgiveness and control.

300 Mini Driver is available for pre-order and will be available online and in stores Thursday, July 15.

“It’s been 20 years since we last made a metalwood this size,” says Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade’s director of product creation for metalwoods and irons. “It was only natural to call it the 300 Mini Driver to acknowledge what the 300 Series meant to our brand and the game. We blended the throwback look with modern carbon, titanium and steel construction to produce a club the speaks to TaylorMade loyalists while delivering distance from the tee and the fairway.”

Key technologies

Size

Obviously size is the main factor with the Mini Driver. The head is actually the size of the drivers TaylorMade released in 2000, and is the next version of the product line, which saw the Original One Mini Driver come out in 2019. The head uses advanced multi-material construction to provide the optimal combination of low-CG performance and high forgiveness.

Playability

Want to hit it off the deck? Check. Off the tee? Sure. The 300 Mini Driver offers high launch/low spin characteristics that allow you to hit it into a green on a par-5, or off the tee on a mid-length par-4.  While it may not be big, the heads makes up for its small stature in speed using the combination of a high-strength titanium face and Thru-Slot Speed PocketTM to deliver ball speed.

Twist Face

A key technology in TaylorMade products in recent years, Twist Face straightens out toe and heel shots, allowing you to find more fairways. The club also has a V-Steel soleplate that lowers the center of gravity, and helps with turf interaction when you’re hitting 300 Mini Driver from the turf.

Is it for me?

Would you love to have more control over your driver, but hit it longer than your 3-wood? That’s where Mini Driver fits—essentially a 2-wood that can be hit off the fairway into a long hole, or off the tee on shorter, tighter holes. While not for everyone, this is a club that players should consider when looking at their mix of clubs, especially in the 3-wood/hybrid category.
