Your First Look: TaylorMade M5 & M6 metalwoods

Pushing engineering boundaries like never before, Speed Injected Twist Face takes performance to unsurpassed levels with the next generation of M technology.

The PGA Tour’s best receive “spicy” driver heads. The average golfer—not so much. By spicy, we’re talking about drivers with faces that are right up against the legal limit mandated by the United States Golf Association and offer maximum distance. Manufacturing drivers that offer the best in distance, but remain conforming has been outside of the reach of most companies in the past.

But with the release of the M5 and M6 driver, TaylorMade says it will consistently deliver the fastest drivers on the market, roughly two miles per hour faster than anything else. Twist Face (first introduced in last year’s M3 and M4 drivers) is still part of the equation, but now it comes with “Speed Injection.” Faster drivers equal more yardage—and that’s what TaylorMade is promising with its latest models.

Mass manufacturing golf clubs come with some concessions. In order to conform to USGA specifications, club makers can’t push the boundaries for fear of making illegal clubs. That means they back off slightly, resulting in drivers that are a touch slower. However, players on the PGA Tour cherry pick the best and hottest drivers, clubs that are right up against the USGA limit.

With its M5 and M6 drivers, TaylorMade has created a driver that will consistently be just clear of the USGA specs. How do they pull this off? By making driver heads that are too fast for the USGA and then using an algorithm and a sophisticated manufacturing process that brings the head back to conforming, TaylorMade says it can offer gains of up to two miles per hour. And that gain means more distance for everyone.

Key technologies

Twist Face

Last year’s breakthrough technology is still found in this year’s driver, and incorporated into the fairway woods as well for the first time. To limit hooks and slices, the driver face was modified on the high-toe (face opened) and low-heel (face closed).

A new Twist on Twist Face

To maximize distance, TaylorMade is injecting the face of each new driver to make them conforming. You’ll notice the two screws low on the face that allow TaylorMade to inject just enough resin to slow the driver in under to make make it as close to USGA conforming specifications as possible.

“We start by making the face of the driver illegal, and tuning it back to put it in the optimal zone,” says Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade’s vice-president of global product. “We’re talking about increasing speed by a mile per hour, which is a big deal in our world.”

Bigger sweet spot

Sixty-six percent bigger in the M5 than previous models, TaylorMade says.

Inverted T-Track

The M5 is the most customizable TaylorMade driver yet—and part of that is because of the T-Track, which allows for 1,770 unique center of gravity configurations. 20 grams of weight (two 10 g weights) can be moved to create the right weight pattern for your specific swing. This is more than double the adjustability of the original M1 driver.

Aerodynamic Carbon Sole Design with ‘Inertia Generator’

With the same carbon composite crown as the M5, the M6 driver adds a carbon fiber sole, allowing discretionary weight to be moved lower, creating maximum forgiveness.

Who’s it for?

M5 Driver

The latest and greatest, with incredible adjustability, M5 is perfect for the player who wants to fine tune their driver and is interested in being fit as closely as possible for their particular swing.

M6 Driver

Less adjustable than M5, M6 is also a lower price. Aimed at the golfer who needs a very forgiving club, and is willing to sacrifice some degree of customization to get it. Also available in a draw-bias model.

Fairway Woods

Though similar to the concept in the driver, fairway woods have some significant differences, so TaylorMade tweaked its TwistFace concept. Offering 1.5 degrees of “twist,” TaylorMade says the metalwoods will find more fairways.

The new M5 fairway features a 65g moveable steel weight, which is slightly more than 30% of the total head weight, allowing for significant customization, while the M6 fairways have a reworked Speed Pocket that is designed to provide more ball speed for strikes low on the clubface. The club also optimizes the center of gravity, increasing energy transfer at impact.

Who is it for?

M5 Fairways

The ideal fairway wood for the better player seeking to match the club to the nuances of their swing.

M6 Fairways

With a draw-bias version that delivers up to 15-yards of right to left movement, and a Rocket 3 14-degree model for low spin, M6 is a great choice for those who want TwistFace in a fairway wood, but aren’t that interested in the premium for adjustability.
