Last year TaylorMade made waves when they released the Stealth driver—a red, carbon-face driver that greatly improved ball speeds over traditional titanium-faced drivers. This year, the company is sticking with the Stealth brand, with three versions of the driver that are designed for even more speed and forgiveness.
“Simply put, people who hit the new drivers will notice two things right away versus the Stealth,” said TaylorMade’s senior director of product creation, Tomo Bystedt. “The first thing they’ll notice is more forgiveness across the entire face, and the second thing is faster ball speeds on off-centre strikes.”
The three 2023 TaylorMade drivers are the Stealth 2, Stealth 2 Plus and Stealth 2 HD—each of them builds on the success of the original Stealth and the 60X Carbon Twist Face.
The new 60X Carbon Twist Face features an advanced version of the Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) which helps keep ball speeds high on off-centre strikes. The new face is also two grams lighter than the original (and about half the weight of a traditional titanium face) and has a larger sweet spot thanks to an expanded COR.
“We reprofiled the geometry of the face, saved some weight and made it thinner,” Bystedt said.
Bystedt said that the Stealth 2 drivers feature even more carbon throughout the entire clubhead as well.
“The new Stealth 2 drivers are nearly two-thirds carbon—the most ever for our company,” he said.
Part of the driver’s newly added carbon is the composite ring (which used to be titanium) that united the head of the club and freed up additional weight.
Each of the Stealth 2 drivers features a nanotexture polyurethane cover encasing the 60X Carbon Twist Face, the flexible Speed Pocket and the asymmetric Inertia Generator.
Stealth 2 Specifics
The base driver for 2023, the Stealth 2 driver, comes in 9 and 10.5-degree options for both right and left-handed golfers, as well as a 12-degree right-handed option. The driver is turned for mid-to-high launch and mid-to-low spin with a neutral flight bias.
Who is it for?
If you’re after a driver that’s going to produce lots of ball speed and forgiveness, need a little help with spin and launch conditions but aren’t after adjustable to flight, this driver is for you.
Stealth 2 Plus Specifics
Like the Stealth 2, the Plus driver features much same technology. The biggest difference between the two drivers is the Plus features a sliding back weight of 15 grams that allows control shot shape by shifting mass on the sole to create a desired ball flight. The plus also includes a lighter weight in the rear asymmetric inertia generator to optimize Moment of Inertia (MOI) and forgiveness. The Stealth 2 Plus comes in 9- and 10.5-degree options with left- and right-handed dexterity. An 8-degree right-handed Stealth 2 Plus is also available.
Who is it for?
You’re a golfer who doesn’t need any help spinning the ball and creating speed with the driver. However, when you’re after the most adjustability possible to create your desired ball flight (from left to right).
Stealth 2 HD
Very similar to Stealth 2 and Stealth 2 Plus in many ways, the Stealth 2 HD differs in one key area: draw bias. The standard draw bias promotes corrective flight thanks to the inertia generator closer to the heel of the club head. The HD driver is the highest MOI in the family of Stealth 2 drivers and comes in both left-and-right-handed 9, 10.5 and 12-degree models.
Who is it for?
The golfer who needs a little extra help launching and spinning drives as well as someone who wants a draw-bias built right into the driver.
