TaylorMade’s Spider X putter has been a resounding success since it launched earlier this year, with its streamlined look and copper and blue models turning a lot of heads. The company continues to evolve the concept—now with a version that’s chalk coloured, available now in-stores and online.
What You Need to Know
Better alignment and, in turn, helping you hole more putts. That was the key for TaylorMade’s Spider X when the company launched the putter at the beginning of the year. The goal was to make putting easier, said Chris Trott, who works promoting the company’s putters to the best players in the world on Tour. One of the key characteristics for Spider X was its unique colours—copper and blue. But even then, TaylorMade recognized the colours wouldn’t work for every player—which is why the company has launched its latest version—Chalk. Jason Day put the new putter in play at recent tournaments, while others—like Rory McIlroy—continue to rely on the copper version to help guide them to victory.
Key Technologies
Colour is key
From the moment it was introduced, Trott recognized certain players would gravitate to putters of different colours. While the copper colour made the Spider X immediately recognizable, and the options in the design made it easy to align, it wasn’t certain that every TaylorMade staff player would appreciate the bold aesthetic. That’s one of the key reasons the company has launched its Chalk colour—to get the putter in the hands of players who are otherwise not predisposed to the existing colour schemes.
True Path Alignment System
One of the keys to the putter, the alignment aid was developed through extensive testing that demonstrated 66% of strikes from 12 feet were off the toe. The True Path Alignment System was designed to compensate for that.
X Design
The sightlines on the putter are one its key distinguishing characteristics, and many of TaylorMade’s key staffers—Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and others—provided input for this alignment system, which is the most aggressive the company has created to date.
More forgiveness
How do you generate higher MOI with a putter—move more weight to the outside frame, which is exactly what TaylorMade has done with the Spider X. The more stable head shape provides more weight on the outside of the frame (36% on both perimeters versus 30%). Still unconvinced? The style of the Spider X makes it three times more stable than a traditional blade.
New Pure Roll Insert
Getting a putt to start properly off the face is key. Spider X incorporates a new thicker insert for better roll, as well as better sound and feel. The new insert promotes forward spin off the strike, for better accuracy and distance.
Who’s it for?
Are you a golfer who loved the concept of the original Spider X, but couldn’t get past the colour? If so, the Chalk version is exactly for you. Neutral in appearance, the focus is entirely on aligning to make that next 10-foot putt—which is exactly as it should be.
I’ve been a 2 ball Callaway guy. Like the looks but must feel it. Will try it in a golf store first.
Now you guys come out with the grey and white..maybe you guys should do all your colors before you release it to the public..
