TaylorMade Introduces MG4 Wedges With More Spin Through Laser Channels

First TaylorMade introduced “raw” faces on its MG line of wedges to limit the loss of spin on shots in wet conditions. Engineers found wedge spin diminished by 50 percent in wet conditions.

With “raw” faces, that spin loss dropped in half. But the company thought it could do even better—which is where the big gains come in its MG4 wedges.

“We didn’t want to depart too much from what was working,” says Greg Cesario, a team member with TaylorMade’s wedge developers. “But we can now provide much less spin reduction.”

Spin Tread Technology

The key new technology in the Milled Grind line, this is designed to reduced lost spin to only 10 percent in wet conditions. Using laser etching—think of what you see on a tire tread—TaylorMade engineers created a roughness that results in better friction and channels moisture away for better control. The laser treatment uses both the raw face and the strategically designed grooves to improve spin in wet conditions by allowing the ball to make contact with the face longer.

Aesthetic

The wedges have a darker look, designed to limit any distractions from sunlight glare.

Redesigned Back

The back of the wedges were redesigned to give the wedge two advantages—both a more solid feel, while also appearing softer at impact. This improves flight control.

Options

Standard available lofts include lofts from 46 to 60 degrees. Standard bounce only for 46- and 48-degree versions.

Low Bounce

Low leading edge for added versatility and shot making in firm conditions.

Low Bounce V

For players with a shallow attack angle, this grind offers exceptional spin and the ability to manipulate face angles effectively.

Standard Bounce

An all-around strong performing wedge that limits digging and allows the clubhead to glide into the turf.

Standard Bounce C

Offers increased versatility for players who prefer to manipulate face angles, without compromising bounce performance.

High Bounce

TaylorMade’s standard high bounce design is playable for skilled golfers and defies the convention that high bounce wedges are only for high handicappers. This is a favourite for Rory McIlroy.

High Bounce Wide

A high bounce option that offers improved playability and excels in sand play. Noted for its wide sole.

Tiger Woods Grind

Offered in 56 and 60 degrees, the sole on the MG4 TW was inspired by Tiger’s grind and the goal of being extremely versatile. The 56° wedge is a dual sole with heavy heel relief, while the 60° has an extremely high bounce on the leading edge with a shaved heel.
