TaylorMade continues with raw approach in third evolution of Milled Grind wedges

TaylorMade’s Raw Face Technology continues to be a key in the latest iteration of the company’s MG line of wedges, with Raised Micro Ribs creating more interaction with the ball. The all new MG3 wedges can be pre-ordered now and will be available in store and online September 3rd.

Wedges wear out—more quickly than most golfers recognize.

That’s the conclusion TaylorMade engineers came to in developing the latest generation of its Milled Grind 3 wedges, which continue to incorporate the company’s Raw Face Technology.

It turns out wedge spin declines much more quickly than anticipated, so the company worked hard to devise a concept that adds more spin on shots of less than 40 yards.

“Golfers don’t realize they are losing on spin more quickly than they expect,” says Bill Price, product creation lead for TaylorMade putters and wedges. “They are losing on spin over time—far fewer than 1,000 shots.”

Key technologies

Raw Face Technology

Unplated faces on the wedges are designed to rust over time and add spin. TaylorMade designed a seal so the faces won’t rust prior to being used by the golfer. Raw wedges are preferred by many tour pros because of the enhanced spin, especially in wet conditions.

Raised Micro-Ribs

One of the most notable changes are the Raised Micro-Ribs, which are .002 mm tall and .25 mm wide. These sit between the traditional grooves (TaylorMade incorporate ZTP Raw Groove Design in the face) and make the textured face more abrasive, increasing the interaction between the face and ball on shorter shots.

Aesthetic

Modern and Minimalistic—that’s how Price describes the new version of the MG wedges. The challenge with wedges is to make them appeal to a broad group of golfers—from the best players to mid-handicappers. With the scooped out back allows for mass placement to improved center of gravity and the ability to flight shots. The wedges come in Raw Chrome and Satin Black.

Four bounce versions

Low Bounce

The new sole provides smoother interaction with the turf as the leading edge sits closer to the ground.

Standard Bounce

A slightly wider sole than on previous versions, this bounce is aimed at remelincreased playability and versatility, allowing golfers to approach shorter shots by opening the face.

High Bounce

Designed for players with a steep attack angle or those who play softer golf courses. The slightly wider sole conditions are designed for smoother turf interaction.

TW Grind

Inspired by the demands of Tiger Woods, and offered in 56 and 60 degree models, the 60 degree model has extremely high bounce on the leading edge and a shaved feel to allow the golfer to hit flop shots. Extremely versatile.

Are they for me?

With a wide range of loft options and bounce possibilities, TaylorMade has created a wedge that has multiple options depending on how and where you like to play, and should prove effective for golfers with handicaps ranging from scratch to 15.
