Cobra’s King F8 irons are setting the standard for forgiveness, but it is the company’s unique ONE Length™ irons that have captured the imagination of golfers. PGA Tour star Bryson DeChambeau, golf’s mad scientist, has popularized the concept.
ONE Length irons rose to prominence when DeChambeau used his own configured set as an amateur. Upon turning pro, he signed with Cobra and the company began building a ONE Length set for him that was later made available to the public. Cobra has been pleasantly surprised with the demand for the ONE Length™ set, which have really captured the imagination of the average golfer.
We caught up with DeChambeau at Cobra’s launch event this fall. He was effusive in his praise of the King F8 ONE Length set.
“It was the coolest thing ever because Cobra was a company cool enough and bold enough to take a risk,” he says. “Golf isn’t good at that.”
As for the process of working through the new irons, DeChambeau says it didn’t take long to adapt his game to F8.
“I test them from scratch when I get a new set,” he explains. “Once you execute the shots in conditions like wind, you really learn to trust them. It is when you’re out on the course and you see exactly what you feel, and exactly what you want to see, that’s when you become comfortable.”
Product Keys
The King F8 one-length irons feature much of the same technology as the standard F8 irons (Arccos sensors and Cobra Connect, for example), but with a few distinct differences.
In the case of the F8 set, the shafts are once again 7-iron length but there are some distinctions between the standard and ONE Length irons:
- TECFLO construction allowed Cobra to manipulate the weight to 7-iron specs, while keeping a traditional look.
- Cobra improved the trajectory from shots hit with F8 by using progressive hosel lengths and wider sole widths, factors that lower the CG in the irons and create higher shots. The company raised the CG in the scoring irons to allow golfers to flight their approach shots.
- Cobra teamed with shaft partners to make one-length shafts that play softer and launch higher in the longer irons, and play stiffer and launch lower in short irons.
Who are they for?
When it comes to ONE Length, it makes sense to let DeChambeau explain who the clubs appeal to. “The overall design of the head has gotten much better. The most influential part of testing a ONE Length iron set is the unique sensation. It is a feeling that allows people who have never been great ball strikers to think, ‘Wow, this is simpler, this is easier.’ It brings them hope. When people look at the ONE Length irons they’ll say ‘wow’. And when they hit them they are going to be impressed.”
Cobra F8 ONE Length irons are available now in-store and online.
