In the greater scheme of golf equipment, hybrids are still a relative newcomer and are a concept that is being continually refined. Callaway has long been at the forefront of hybrid innovation, delivering a series of models that have appealed to a wide variety of skill sets. Callaway’s tradition of hybrid excellence continues in 2021 with their release of Apex 21 and Apex Pro 21.
Both Apex 21 and Apex 21 Pro feature some of Callaway’s latest technological features found throughout the company’s club offerings and will be available for pre-order on January 26, and in-store February 11.
Tech Tale
A.I. Flash Face
Callaway’s signature Flash Face SS21 is back, once again developed with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence—a longstanding R&D methodology Callaway continues to utilize throughout their equipment offerings.
Jailbreak Velocity Blades
The same breakthrough technology used in their fairway woods, the latest iteration of Jailbreak delivers exceptional ball speeds across more off the face. Instead of the standard cylindrical bars that we see in their drivers, Callaway’s Apex 21 hybrids leverage a blade-like design that works in tandem with Callaway’s Face Cup, which provides flex at impact. The relationship between the stiffening qualities of Jailbreak and the flexibility of Face Cup create a hybrid that is firm and fast, yet malleable enough to maximize less than perfect contact.
Apex Pro 21
As the name suggests, this model is geared toward the highly skilled player who wants a hybrid that can carry like a fairway wood, but has the workability of an iron. Callaway’s managed to pack all that versatility into a smaller iron-like profile, which better players prefer to see at address. In other words, if a hybrid is an amalgamation of a fairway wood and an iron, the Apex Pro 21 took its dominant genes from the iron side of the family, providing shot shaping opportunities not readily available in a larger set up.
Is it for me?
If you’re a highly skilled player who enjoys having a long iron but wouldn’t mind a bit more forgiveness and distance, you’ll appreciate Apex 21 Pro’s maneuverability. The ability to work the ball from various lies will make going for the green in two all the more appealing.
Apex 21
The Apex line has historically been targeted toward highly skilled players. However, Callaway has expanded their marketability to a wider audience by developing a more player-friendly model. With a larger head than past gen hybrids, the Apex 21 hybrid is the opposite of Apex 21 Pro in that it’s more fairway wood than long iron, appealing to the average golfer’s desire for greater forgiveness and consistency. Unlike the Pro model, Apex 21 comes with an adjustable hosel to dial in preferred loft for exacting trajectories, making it something worth tinkering with.
Is it for me?
For players who like having a versatile club that can be played off the tee, from the shortgrass and out of the rough, they’ll appreciate Apex 21’s bulkier profile and greater forgiveness. If you’re a mid-handicap player who wants to fill the gap between their 3-wood and 4-iron, this is just the ticket.
Apex 21 and Apex Pro 21 will be available for pre-order on January 26, and in-store February 11.
