PING’s i210 is a much-loved iron. The iron created big fans of the product, meaning when PING went to make the next generation, it was a daunting task. With that in mind, the follow-up, the i230 doesn’t veer too far from the path created by the i210. Aimed at the avid player who wants to take their game to the next level, PING compares the irons to the company’s fabled EYE2, an iron set that appeals to a wide cross-section of golfers. With low centre of gravity designed to increase forgiveness and greater ball speeds, the i230 is sure to win a new generation of fans.
“The i230 iron sits in the middle of our iron offerings, so it requires us to balance a variety of performance attributes,” says John K. Solheim, PING’s CEO. “It needs the precision and solid feel of a players’ iron, while offering the forgiveness a lot of golfers expect from a PING iron.”
Key technologies
Sound and feel
With a four-piece badge and a 304 stainless steel cap with injection-moulded thermoplastic, i230 irons have the sound and feel that will appeal to a wide variety of golfers. For better players who demand a great feel in their shots and responsiveness to mishits, the i230 will provide that feedback, while also offering trajectory control.
Compact size
The longer irons—three to five—are slightly smaller than the previous generation, while the rest of the set is similar in size to the i210.
Key PING tech
You’ll find PING’s MicroMax grooves in the face, a technology designed to deliver consistent launch and spin, especially in the longer irons, and greater control in the shorter irons. Hydropearl 2.0 chrome finish helps significantly with shots from wet grass and assists with spin rates. All of this means the i230 appeals to avid amateurs and pros alike.
Who are they for?
PING’s i230 line sits in the middle of the company’s lineup, meaning these are irons that will appeal to some low handicappers seeking forgiveness, especially in the long irons, as well as better golfers seeking a great looking iron that offers additional forgiveness. While PING’s i525 line of irons offers big distance gains, the i230 is an iron for a player seeking something a bit more exacting.
iCrossover Hybrid
Utility irons have captured a segment of the market in recent years. PING’s iCrossover was crafted for players with higher swing speeds, looking for long irons that merge well with their existing sets. The result is an iron that offers high launch and more distance.
Key technologies
A thin, maraging steel face and lower centre of gravity, which is closer to the impact location, creates more energy transfer and more distance. The face is robotically welded to the 17-4 stainless steel body with a lower-hinged bend point to provide higher launch for better stopping power.
Sound and feel
A small internal cavity with an EVA polymer on the back creates a great sounding iron.
Mixed sets
With a similar shape to the i230, the iCrossover is a great option for those seeking a long iron that comes with big distance and a high flight. You’ll find the iCrossover provides much of the same technology as the i230, including MicroMax grooves and Hydropearl 2.0 finish.
Adjustable
A first for a PING iron, the iCrossover offers an adjustable hosel with eight settings, allowing a player to tune in loft and lie. The iron has a range of 1.5 degrees loft and lie combinations. It is available in the equivalent of a 2 through 4-iron.
