Low-spin and high-speed—that’s the new TS4 driver from Titleist, while the TS1 offers a lightweight option for slower swinging golfers. The latest drivers from the Titleist Speed Project expand the line by offering variations new to the market.

The new TS4, which will make its public appearance this month, is the latest from Titleist, which launched the TS line last year. The TS line has garnered significant attention since hitting the market in 2018, largely because it creates increased ball speed over previous Titleist models. The new TS4 offers high ball speeds and low spin—a combination that should add extra yards to your drives. “TS4 is the ultra low-spin driver that still produces exceptional ball speed,” says Josh Talge, Titleist’s vice-president of marketing. “If you want to hit it longer but are having trouble controlling spin off the tee, TS4 was made for you.”

For those who’ve undergone a club fitting at Golf Town, you’ll recognize the higher the spin, the shorter the drive. For years companies have tried to find the right mix of forgiveness and spin, which is the Holy Grail of golf drivers. Titleist feels it has the right mix for higher spin players with the TS4.

Key technologies:

• Forward centre of gravity: By pushing the CG 5 mm forward versus the TS2, shots hit with the TS4 spin less and produce a flight that is piercing, straight and consistent.
• The new driver comes in a smaller size—430 cc as opposed to 460 cc for the TS2 and TS3—and its Speed Chassis is designed to really cut spin. If you cut the ball, you’ll find it spins more and that can hurt distance. The TS4 is designed to deal with that.
• Titanium Crown: A thin cast titanium crown allowed weight to be shifted low and forward, killing extra spin.
• Thin face: One of the keys for the TS line is the thin face, which reduces weight and allowed it to be positioned to knock off RPMs of spin.
• Shape: The TS4 has a traditional pear shape, which reduces drag, allowing players to swing faster and increase clubhead speed.
• Adjustable: The TS4 has 16 independent loft and lie settings.

The TS1 is a lightweight driver is 275 grams, and designed to maximize distance for those with swing speeds of around 85 miles per hour. “For seniors, women, juniors – really anyone who is the moderate swing speed player – TS1 is an absolute powerhouse,” says Talge “You can swing as smooth and easy as you want and the ball just takes off. The distance just feels effortless.”

• With only 275 grams overall—45 grams lighter than TS2—the TS1 allows slower-swinging golfers to generate faster clubhead speeds.
• Light shafts—with shafts weighing 40 to 45 grams (and ladies flex 35 to 39 grams), the ability for golfers with slower swings to get the ball in the air is easier than ever. Even the grip is lighter—a 32 gram Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 Lite grip is 20 grams lighter than standard.

Who are they for?

The TS1 is aimed at a market that’s emerged from Asia in recent years—high-end drivers that are lighter and easier to swing for those golfers who have slower swings in the 85 mph range. The TS4 is the opposite—a driver for those who go at the ball hard, but create too much spin and are losing distance. If that’s you—think cuts that appear to be costing you a lot of yards—than the TS4 might be perfect for your game.
