From driver through irons, Callaway’s Big Bertha B-21 family executes on its mission to help golfers play better golf. Using the latest AI, these models are destined to lower scores. The Big Bertha B-21 will all be available starting September 10, 2020.
You know the name—it’s the same one that made headlines two decades ago when it heralded a new era of big-time game improvement equipment. The driver that made the game easier back then is once again on top—except this time it brought the whole family. Needless to say, Callaway’s Big Bertha brand has no plans to relinquish its place among the game’s most playable clubs. So it would make sense that the next generation of this industry icon is yet again set to deliver ground-breaking technology directed at helping the mid to high handicapper. Engineered to maximize the average Sunday warrior’s enjoyment of the game, Callaway’s R&D team has delivered a complete set that provides the optimal combination of low-spin and high MOI, something that Callaway’s Senior Director of Brand Management Dave Neville, calls “a new recipe for distance and forgiveness.” Sounds delicious. Perhaps Callaway’s own tagline best summarizes what to expect from the Big Bertha B-21 family: distance anyway you swing it.
The Driver
One of the most common difficulties higher handicaps have with their drivers is their inability to deliver the clubface square at impact. This underlying swing problem, whether stemming from a lingering injury, slower hip rotation, or natural ageing, causes excess spin off the clubface, resulting in that droopy, short slice that most golfers are all too familiar with. Instead of trying to adjust the swing path of every player, Callaway’s Big Bertha B-21 leverages this slightly open impact angle by configuring the driver’s weight, face angle, and centre of gravity. In combination, these changes generate what Dr. Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s Senior VP of Research and Development believes is the goldilocks solution to spin rate—not too much, not too little, but just right for the average golfer. “Players are going to swing it that way,” says Hocknell, “so why don’t we configure a driver to reduce spin.” Less spin helps diminish the severity of wayward slices, ultimately straightening out the ball and increasing distance.
How’s it Work?
It’s simple—sort of. Callaway’s renowned for their use of Artificial Intelligence in engineering driver faces to launch straight and fast, and they’ve once again implemented the latest AI modelling techniques when designing the Great Big Bertha. We’ll leave the exact details to the lab coats, but in layman’s terms, AI helped create a face design that consistently reduces the right amount of spin for greater control. As the good doctor, Alan Hocknell explains, the improvement higher handicaps have seen with the driver in testing is significant. “[They] started at 3000 and up to 4000 (rpm), and when you have that much backspin and you’re hitting across the line, you also have a lot of side spin. The two together lead to that unappealing shot that rises quickly and heads right in a hurry.” So, what’s the doc prescribing? A driver that utilizes an unusual combination of a lower centre of gravity that’s positioned more forward with a high MOI that produces faster ball speeds across the entire face. And speaking of the face, Big Bertha B-21 has a particularly large one, yet another feature of this game improvement driver that induces confidence when viewed at address. To top it off, Big Bertha B-21 comes in a slight draw-bias, giving players that extra bit of help to keep it in the fairway
Is it for me?
As Phil Mickelson would ask, “do you like hitting bombs?” If so, then you’re going to want to give this driver a closer look. Not only does Big Bertha B-21 help you launch it deep, it also works to reduce slicing. If you’re the shortest hitter in your weekly foursome, it may be time to remediate your game with this driver.
Tech Specs
Flash Face
Drilling a tee ball out of the centre of the clubface is nice, but let’s be honest, it’s a feeling few of us experience with great regularity. For that reason, Big Bertha B-21’s AI-inspired Flash Face SS21 delivers explosive ball speed even when heeled, toed, thinned or skied.
Jailbreak
A longstanding staple in Callaway’s drivers, Jailbreak consists of two bars that run vertical behind the clubface. This unseen feature works in tandem with the driver’s lighter carbon crown, creating tension across the face of the club for a higher MOI.
Streamlined Shape
With a more triangular head, Big Bertha B-21 delivers a sleek look from above and greater aerodynamic efficiency throughout the swing. Match that with Big Bertha’s classic red and blue colour scheme and you have a driver that looks as good as it performs.
Fairway Finders
For when you need to dial it back off the tee, or want to go for the green in two, Big Bertha B-21 fairway woods utilize much of the same engineering theory as the big stick. With an oversized build and a slightly closed set up to reduce the severity of wayward shots, Big Bertha B-21 fairways woods are ideal for players who struggle to get the ball consistently airborne. The club’s shallow, super-fast face has an expanded sweet spot, meaning even your miss-hits will travel impressively far. Coupled with Jailbreak technology for improved forgiveness and greater distance, the new Big Bertha B-21 fairway woods will have you putting for eagle.
Tech Specs
Bigger, Lighter Clubhead
The T2C Triaxial carbon crown generates a higher MOI, delivering faster ball speeds from a larger overall design.
AI Engineering
Callaway’s R&D have implemented the wonders of AI to create a super-fast SS21 Flash Face, providing golfers with generous distance and forgiveness
Draw-Bias
The offset clubhead promotes a draw ball flight, working to reduce swooping slices that diminish distance and increase scores.
Is it for me?
If you’re struggling to consistently hit your fairway woods, whether off the tee or from the short grass, you’ll love what Callaway has done with these guys. High-launching and easy-hitting makes for a fairway wood you can finally rely on when you need it most.
Hybrids
With an oversized head, offset face for squarer impact, and a thorough game-improvement aesthetic, Big Bertha B-21 hybrids deliver towering ball flights with ease. Hybrids are known for their playability, something that has made them one of the most popular clubs on the market, and also one of the reasons they’re found in the bags of tour professionals and weekend warriors alike. The Big Bertha B-21 is designed specifically for the latter. With the help of AI, Callaway has implemented their renowned Flash Face SS21 into the hybrid, creating an enhanced sweet spot that promotes faster ball speeds from less than ideal contact. For those wanting to a versatile club that is easy to hit from a variety of lies, look no further, you’ve found your match. In fact, you may have found several matches, as the Big Bertha B-21 hybrid comes in several lofts.
Key Tech
Metal-Injected Molding Weights
Over 70 grams of tungsten weights located on the club’s sole allow for improved contact and higher launch trajectories.
Jailbreak
Located behind the clubface, these vertical bars support the face at impact and connect the crown and sole of the club, leading to faster ball speeds and greater consistency.
Confidence at Address
The super offset face induces a clean look when standing over the ball, something that often translates to more fluid swings and better shots.
Is it for me?
Hybrids are great, no matter your handicap, but this model is especially great for players who need all the help they can get. Don’t worry, that’s pretty much all of us. Even though they’re made for the average player, there’s nothing average about this hybrid.
Irons
With a lot of the industry’s attention and resources put toward irons for the highly skilled players, Callaway has refocused their efforts in delivering a proper super game improvement iron to help a broad spectrum of handicaps. “We’ve drifted away from the Big Bertha heritage over the last few models,” explains Dr. Alan Hocknell, who admits most game improvement irons released by the industry do not go far enough in delivering designs specifically focused toward higher handicaps. “There’s a great opportunity to re-establish Big Bertha as the leading super game improvement technology iron,” says Hocknell. Whether you’re a 15 or a 35, these irons deliver a comforting aesthetic, with a thick topline and offset face for greater consistency.
Callaway has once again partnered with AI in developing the iron’s Flash Face Cup, which helps expand the sweet spot across more of the face. The iron also utilizes a Visible Tungsten Energy Core that pushes the CG further back, delivering effortlessly high ball flights. When you combine these two technological feats, what you get are irons that give every golfer more of what they want—consistency and distance. And although Callaway has recently released their Mavrik Max iron, a seemingly inter-company competitor, Hocknell is quick to assert that Big Bertha B-21 deploys even further game improvement features, including a wider sole and larger face.
Tech Specs
Urethane Microspheres
Vibration-reducing microspheres are tucked in the back of the clubhead, promoting a consistent, velvety feel at impact.
Forgiving Nature
With a truly oversized construction that includes a super wide sole, the clubhead doesn’t dig into the turf at impact, allowing for smoother, more consistent contact.
AI-inspired Face
Flash Face Cup provides the optimal face design for each individual iron loft, so every club is perfectly suited for greater forgiveness and distance. The 360 Face Cup absorbs force at impact then releases it back to the ball for a sling-shot effect that launches shots into the stratosphere.
Is it for me?
We all need a little help from time to time, especially on the golf course. These irons take game improvement to a new level, delivering a super wide sole and generously-sized face. If you’re having a hard time with your current set, then maybe it’s time to try something that’s a little kinder to your game—these irons may just be it.
Is it possible to reserve the Bigbertha B21 for when it comes in the store and hoe much will it be
Hello, thank you for reaching out. Pre-orders for the Big Bertha B-21 begin on August 27.
Nice line-up of the B-21 series from Callaway. I wish the higher lofted options that are available in right-handed clubs were available in left-handed clubs. I get that the population is significantly weighted to righties but it just takes the will of the industry to make it happen. Maybe retailers need to push a little harder on behalf of their customers. Thank you for the preview.
all sounds good
