Mizuno is back with an update to its popular MP iron lineup, this time with the MP-18, the MP-18 SC (split cavity), the MP-18 MMC (multi-material construction), and the MP-18 MMC FLI-HI. We chatted with Chris Caldwell, Mizuno Canada’s Chief Fitting Expert to talk about all of the new and exciting enhancements that the MP-18 irons offer.
“I really think there’s an MP iron for a lot of different players in this new release,” says Caldwell, and that’s because one of the keys to the new Mizuno lineup is the ability to mix and match clubs across the MP options available. For many players that means taking some of the higher lofted clubs from SC models, and mixing in mid-irons from MMC, and low irons from FLI-Hi.
“When you look at the lineup and see the various models, you’ll find they are perfect to be mix and matched,” says Caldwell. “What we’re really talking about is three-and-a-half sets of irons that can be put together in various configurations to create one set.”
Which One Is Right For You
The MP-18 is the traditional muscleback preferred by many of the best on the PGA Tour. However, the MP-18 MMC and MMC FLI-HI are likely to be the irons that have the broadest appeal. They have a larger blade, but provide similar launch conditions to the SC irons, with stronger lofts and lower spin.
“What you’re seeing with MMC is a club that looks like the MP-18 but works for a wide variety of players, from the tour pro to the 14-handicap,” says Caldwell.
The new irons use an updated version of Mizuno’s Grain Flow Forging process called GFF HD, which the company says creates an even better feel than past MP models. That’s saying something since Mizuno has become the company of choice of some of 2017’s best players, including Brooks Koepka and Jhonattan Vegas.
The long irons in the MMC version feature eight grams of titanium along the perimeter of the club, while 20 grams of tungsten are inserted in the toe of the club to increase the moment of inertia.
MP-18 MMC FLI-HI irons gives golfers an additional and forgiving option when assembling their MP-18 set. Available in a two-iron through six-iron, these long irons add muscle for higher ball speeds.
