Next year promises to be a big one from TaylorMade. They look to build upon their recent iron success of the P700 Series irons with updated versions of the P7MB, P7MC and P770. Matt Bovee, TaylorMade’s Head of Irons, says the new P700 irons have three main pillars aimed at the preferences of low-handicap players.
“To be a P-series product, you have to have the three pillars of feel, design and performance,” Bovee says. “So, for us to be an industry leader in irons, we had to make sure each of our new irons met the three pillars.”
P770
Key Technologies
Forged Hollow Body Construction
With the P770’s forged hollow body construction, golfers get a soft 8620 carbon steel body and a thin forged 4140 steel face.
SpeedFoam Air
The all-new SpeedFoam Air is 69 percent less dense than its predecessor, which allows weight to be redistributed elsewhere to improve performance. The SpeedFoam Air also dampens vibrations and delivers a fast, flexible face.
FLTD CG
The tungsten weighting positions the centre of gravity the lowest in the long irons and progressively shifts higher throughout the irons, resulting in improved launch and spin conditions.
Thru-Slot Speed Pocket
A key TaylorMade technology, the Thru-Slot Speed pocket provides increased face flexibility while improving ball speeds and distances on shots low on the face.
Who are they for?
A lower handicap golfer who likes the P790 performance (speed, forgiveness, etc.) but prefers the look of an iron that’s a bit smaller.
P7MC
Key Technologies
Muscle Cavity
With ball striking in mind, perimeter weighting is distributed to provide the perfect amount of forgiveness.
Compact Grain Forging
Designed to provide the most solid, consistent feel possible, the P7MC is made from 1025 carbon steel and is five-time forged to produce a tighter, more compact grain structure with fewer defects.
Machine Face and Grooves
Aggressive MX9 scoring line geometry for exact shot-making with machined face.
Tour Shape
With a thin top line and progressive offset, the P7MC looks like a tour player’s club. Also features a narrow sole and tight, leading edge for great turf interaction.
Who are they for?
Did you know the P7MC is TaylorMade’s most popular iron on tour? The reason they are—and the reason they’re for you—is they play as well as they look and have a whole bunch of forgiveness for the odd times your strike isn’t perfect. That said, you must be a very consistent player to pull these off.
P7MB
Key Technologies
Faceted Muscle Back Geometry: An updated back bar uses symmetric geometry to create a classic look.
Tour Shape
With direct input from TaylorMade’s tour staff, the P7MB shape is crafted for workability and features a more compact blade length, narrower sole geometry, and a progressive offset design.
Compact Grain Forging
Designed to provide the most solid, consistent feel possible, the P7MC is made from 1025 carbon steel and is five times forged to produce a tighter, more compact grain structure with fewer defects.
Machine Face and Grooves
Aggressive MX9 scoring line geometry for exact shot-making with machined face.
Who are they for?
If you’re a golfer who wants classic-looking irons but also is searching for irons that allow you to shape the ball, these are just the thing. The P7MB was designed with lots of input from major winners Colin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy—who happen to be two of the best ball strikers on the planet—so if you’re a player who fancies himself as a pure striker, the new P7MB could be your new go-to iron.
