It is estimated you need 36 or fewer putts to break 100. And other estimates say you’ll use your putter for more than 40 percent of your shots in a round (including those hit from off the green). That’s a lot of shots regardless of whether you shoot 110 or 80.
A custom fitting can go a long way for a club that you use on every hole.
Here are key tips for getting fit for the right putter at a Golf Town location near you. A putter fitting should take less than an hour and for most golfers is a eye-opening exercise.
By the numbers
How long are your arms? What type of grip do you like? How long should the shaft be in your putter? These are all considerations our Master Club Fitters have in mind when you start your fitting.
Start with what you’re currently gaming
Bring in your existing putter—it is a great baseline to test other putters against. Maybe you love your putter and roll the rock like Brad Faxon in his prime. Maybe you’ve fallen out of favour with your putter and haven’t seen the bottom of the cup in a few months. Regardless, using your putter is a great starting point for our fitters to see how you approach your scoring shots on the short grass.
Find the putter that fits your stroke.
Golfers often have unique putting strokes, but have a predisposition for a certain style of putter—a blade or a mallet or a center-shafted flatstick. Regardless, you’ve likely fallen in and out of love with your putter, which is why you’ve come to look at options. Our advice—be open about the possibility that your current putter doesn’t actually fit your stroke and that a fitter might find you’re better off using something different.
It doesn’t need to be off by much
If you’re outside of one degree off target on a 10-foot putt, you’ll miss the cup. That’s why it is so important you take some time to go through a putter fitting. If your existing putter is open by a very slight margin, those hard-earned birdie putts will slide by.
