Getting a grip on your game

Save the date! Our Annual Regrip Event starts Wednesday, January 31, 2024. It’s the perfect time to regrip your set and make sure your clubs are ready when spring arrives, and take advantage of some big savings on select grips.

When you’re fit for clubs, one area that is often overlooked is the grip. Most people aren’t sure what grip they need or the value a properly fit grip can do to their game. When going through a fit with one of our master club fitters we will always ask you about your choice in grips at the end of the appointment. It’s an important part of the fitting to make sure you’re getting the most out of your new clubs.

If you’ve never been fit for grips before or still have the standard grip that came with your club, we break down how grips play a part when you do a fitting as well as how one gets fit for grips.

Grip Selection

Selecting the proper grip has some guidelines from a fitting standpoint.  Our fitters can recommend grip size for you but general guidelines are that you want the grip to fill the hand of the golfer without too much overlap of the fingers.

Conversely, if you can not get your fingers all the way around the grip it may be too large.  Customer preference for feel and grip size is the deciding factor when picking out grips.  Try out all sizes and textures and see what you personally like the feel of best.  One of the only guidelines for texture would be around faster swing speed players staying away from softer grips from a wear and tear standpoint.

Both Lamkin & Golf Pride provide free online fitting selector where you measure your hand and answer questions to get an idea of what grip is best for you. Try it out!

How do Standard, midsize, and jumbo grip affect the build (swing weight and composition) of the club?

Stock golf clubs come to build with standard grips that typically weigh around 50 grams. Larger or smaller grips differ in weight and this will change the way the club feels.  Putting “midsize” grips on a standard golf club will make the club feel lighter overall because of the additional weight.  If you add weight to the grip end you have to counter that with more weight in the head to get back into the correct swing weight.  It is always recommended to order clubs from the manufacturer if you are making any grip size, club length, club lie angle changes.  When building the set the manufacturer will adjust the club accordingly to get to the best weight for the club.

Do these same principles apply to putters?

Putter grip size is again very preference and feel based.  You honestly need to try out the sizes to identify what feels and performs best to you.  Swing weight principals apply for putting the same they do for clubs.  Modifying the club from its stock specifications will change the feel of the club.  When changing grips it is recommended to stay in the same weight category as what came on the club unless you want to change the feel to lighter or heavier.  Counter Balanced grips are a new option that will make the head feel a little lighter. If you install a lighter grip it will make the putter head feel heavier.

Our Annual Regrip Event starts Wednesday, January 31 and runs until March 10. It’s the perfect time to regrip your set and make sure your clubs are ready when spring arrives, plus some big savings never hurt!
