The two heavyweights of the golf industry both launched new drivers that should lead sales by this time next year
Callaway’s Epic driver is one of the hottest clubs the company has produced in years and it features a technology the company calls Jailbreak. It’s essentially two titanium rods located behind the face that hold the crown and the sole together as the ball makes impact. That means less energy is lost at impact as the overall club is a lot stiffer. It also allows the face to flex more, meaning more distance, even on off-centre hits.
“The result has been an exceptionally popular club for PGA tour pros in the Callaway family. In fact, this was the club Adam Hadwin had in his bag when he posts his round of 59.”
Dr. Alan Hocknell, head of R&D for Callaway, said there were significant engineering challenges in being able to build this club, but his team eventually found a way to manufacture the Epic. The result has been an exceptionally popular club for PGA Tour Pros in the Callaway family. In fact, this was the club Adam Hadwin had in his bag when he posted his round of 59 at the Career Builder Challenge.

Callaway’s launch is rivaled by the second generation of the M family from TaylorMade. Launched last year, the M1 and M2 drivers jumped into the bags of many golfers who loved the feel, look and performance of the clubs. The company is using the tagline “Same Letter. Better Everything.” and that seems to sum up both new clubs. The M family also got a massive boost when TaylorMade announced that 14-time major winner Tiger Woods would be putting the clubs into play after joining the TaylorMade family. Woods will be using the M2 driver, as well as TaylorMade irons and wedges.

So why are these clubs getting lots of attention? Let’s start with the M1. This year, the club has 43 percent more carbon fibre in the head – and also the sole – than last year’s model and that allowed TaylorMade’s developers to lower the centre of gravity and use more weight in the T-Track system for even more adjustability. Essentially, the M1 now has as much forgiveness as last year’s M2 model without sacrificing any distance. And it can be dialed in to every player’s personal needs.
The M2 model has something called Geocoustic technology, essentially the marriage of multi-materials to deliver geometric shaping and acoustical engineering. There is also a sunken sole shape that allows for a larger face. All these innovations mean the M2 is longer than last year, with maximum forgiveness.
Epic and M drivers are available now at Golf Town. Check them out and see how they can help you off the tee this year.
