Callaway’s new GBB Epic Star line

“Epic performance in an ultra-premium, lightweight package.”

That’s how Dave Neville, Senior Manager of Brand Management for Callaway describes the company’s new Epic Star lineup.

Like a number of lightweight clubs hitting the market in recent months (think XXIO, for example), Callaway’s Epic Star lineup originated in Japan.

In fact, the Epic Star was the best-selling driver this year in Japan. That led the company to begin considering options in bringing the line to Canada.

Available now in select Golf Town locations and golftown.com, the GBB Epic Star package includes a staff bag, driver, fairway woods, hybrids, and irons – PLUS a limited edition Toulon Design San Diego Putter with a Limited Edition Gold Finish.

“There are pockets … with some types of players who are looking for the performance of Epic in a more lightweight package,” says Neville. “That’s what the Epic Star line is all about.”

Features and benefits

How light? Really light.

Epic Star’s driver has what Callaway claims is the first-ever sub-40 gram shaft (Mitsubishi’s Grand Bassara). And they’ve stripped the club down to make it lighter and faster. That means there isn’t an adjustable hosel (it gives engineers another 7 grams of weight to play with), and has created a measurably lighter driver.

“You’re getting a driver that’s in the 283 to 286 weight class, that’s compared to 305 to 315 in Epic,” Neville says. “It is the lightest driver we’ve ever offered.”

While Callaway stripped the driver down for speed, you still get Jailbreak technology, which has made Epic one of the best-selling drivers of the year.

Who is Epic Star for?

In short, Epic Star is a premium line for golfers with slower swing speeds who benefit from lighter clubs. With a D0 swing weight, the driver is ultra-light, but still offers and 11-gram sliding adjustable perimeter weight, which is 6 grams light than the standard Epic.

But Callaway didn’t stop at the driver. The company continued the light-weight story through to fairway woods, hybrids and irons, making a complete line for Epic Star.

“It is a similar type of story—we’re trying to save weight here,” says Neville, when discussing the fairway woods.

The fairway woods have a high moment of inertia, but a low center of gravity, allowing the golfer to launch longer, straighter shots, while the irons use an ultra-light 55-gram Grand Bassara graphite iron shaft, stronger lofts and longer lengths to generate added distance.

  1. Hi,
I would be interested in getting a new driver and a 5 wood & 4 or 3 wood. My Calloway clubs are four years old, I am happy with my irons, hybrids, but I do not hit my driver or other woods as far as I should,
Please let me know if there is anything you can do to help me.
