A closer look at Ben Silverman’s custom putter

Having just recaptured his playing status on the PGA Tour for the 2018-19 season, Toronto’s Ben Silverman is on a roll—quite literally. The former Golf Town employee was strong at shorter putts in his rookie year on the PGA Tour—ranking within the Top 40 in key categories like putts made from five and six feet, which came in handy last month when he had to sink a five footer on the 72nd hole of the Web.com Tour finals to secure his PGA Tour card for the 2018-19 season.

Part of Ben’s putting success is attributable to a strong set up, as well as the comfort with his Bettinardi DASS BBZero Tour Dept Putter.

“I never think about my mechanics when I am putting,” he told Golf Town. “I don’t want to know how the club face is rotating or where my hands are going. That isn’t information that helps me.”

Silverman switched to the Bettinardi putter two years ago. Why did he decide to go with Bettinardi? Well it’s quite simple.

“Coming into a store like Golf Town…I walked around the entire putting green and tested every single putter.” Out of all of them, Bettinardi was his favourite.

Unusual stamps

One of the most notable things about Silverman’s putter is its unique stamps. Silverman has his wife’s name—Morgan—stamped on the hosel.

“I wanted to do something for her,” Silverman told PGATour.com. “She’s been such a huge part of my golf career since we met. It was just something to show my appreciation.”

But it’s the sole of Silverman’s putter that perhaps has the most interesting marks. A family man, Ben once again pays homage to his wife Morgan with her nickname “Motown”, a shark inscribed with “Jack Attack” to honour his one-year-old son, and next to that, Bettinardi’s iconic honeycomb, with matching colours of the Olympic rings that simply says “2020”. A goal of Silverman’s to perhaps represent Canada in Toyko?
