How to Choose the Right Golf Grips

Did you know, golf grips start to wear significantly after 30 rounds. Friction, sweat, dirt, cold, dry air – all of these factors are enemies of your clubs’, leading to slick, non-tacky grips. And when your grips are no longer functioning correctly, you’re forced to tighten your hands on your clubs, which of course, inhibits a free-flowing swing.

A lot of players come to our stores, hand us a club and simply say, “Can I have them exactly the same”, but you really need to consider why you’re using those grips, and think about whether they fit for how you play and the conditions you play in.

When it’s time to replace them, you have the opportunity to consider which grips you’re using and whether they are truly the best for your game.

With that in mind, here are some things to consider when you head to our stores or shop online to take advantage of our Regrip sale.

Standard grips aren’t always the right way to go.

Many sets, especially those where the player wasn’t fit, come with a standard Tour Velvet grip. While truly an ageless product, there are lots of options beyond the Tour Velvet. Do you like a softer grip? Then something from a company like Winn might be right for you. Are you an older player who is seeing the start of arthritis in your hands? Then an oversized grip might be something worth considering.

Size matters

Grip size is important, and should be tailored to your game. If you are a player that struggles with a cut that occasionally turns into a slice, you’ll want to consider smaller grips that allow you to more readily draw the ball, while if you’re a golfer who struggles with a hook, a bigger grip or mid-size with more tape wraps might go a long way to solving your problems.

Consider the conditions

Do you play in hot and humid conditions? Then a half-corded grip might be the right option. The Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 is a perfect choice. They are also less prone to breaking down, though they can be tougher on your hands. That’s one reason grips like Golf Pride’s CP2, which are softer, and reduce grip pressure, have been such a hit in recent years.

Regardless of the direction you choose, those initial Tour Velvets could still be the grip you prefer. But why not at least consider your choices?

There’s an option for everyone—you’ve just got to seek it out, and our employees are trained to help fit you to the proper grip for your game.

  1. Thank you very much for the grip reviews. the whole set of my clubs requires new grips. It’s been fairly long since I last changed the grips of my clubs. Now I think it’s time to change those dirty ole grips.

    1. Hi there. There is a standard installation fee of $3 per grip for grips that were purchased at Golf Town and a $5 per grip fee for customer-provided grips.
