In early January, Callaway added to its international presence by inking a deal with Abraham Ancer, one of the biggest Latin stars in golf. Since signing the pride of Mexico , Abraham Ancer has started off 2022 finishing 35th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and a T-40 finish at the American Express. His next stop on Tour is this week’s WM Phoenix Open.
The current no. 20 in the world is no stranger to Callaway’s gear, using their equipment over the past several seasons to help him ascend through the rankings and assert himself as one of the game’s elite players. Winning the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational last year marked his breakout victory, but not before his impressive 3-1-1 record at the 2019 Presidents Cup.
Unlike most signings that see players depart with their trusted and familiar equipment to try something entirely new, taking on the attendant risks with such a move, Ancer’s signing is far less disruptive. This deal isn’t so much a change of direction as it is cementing a relationship that has proven mutually beneficial for both parties over the past many years. “The performance from their drivers is always impressive, their putters are outstanding, and I’ve developed a strong relationship with their Tour Team. This is a great fit for me, and I can’t wait to get this new year started,” Ancer said in a statement.
The deal will see the 30-year-old use Callaway woods (Driver: Callaway Rogue ST Triple Diamond, 3-wood: Callaway Rogue ST Max, 5-wood: Callaway Rogue ST Max ) an Odyssey putter (Putter: Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K #2) and don a Callaway cap while on the course. Other prominent Callaway professionals include Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, and Phil Mickelson, as well as recently signed LPGA standout Yuka Saso.
American born but raised in Reynosa, Mexico, Ancer first earned his PGA Tour card in 2016 after spending time refining his professional game on the Korn Ferry Tour. After failing to keep his card in his debut season, Ancer was relegated back to the Korn Ferry Tour where he once again flourished, regaining his PGA Tour card in 2018 and never looking back.
