Callaway introduces MD5 wedge with new JAWS grooves

More spin and more control—that’s the key to Callaway’s latest MD5 wedges. The company says is a big step forward from its previous generation.

The Approach:

Milled grooves designed to promote spin and control—that’s at the heart of Callaway’s new MD5 wedges, the latest brainchild from design master Roger Cleveland. By milling the face with extreme precision, Callaway says the grooves in the MD5 are the sharpest and tightest the company has ever created. The result—one hop and stop.

Technology:

Groove-in-Groove:

Callaway places these MicroPositive grooves in the flat parts of the face to add roughness and grip, allowing the wedges to be used for a wide variety of shots. The micro grooves provide 84 different contact points on the wedge face.

Consistency:

Given the extreme precision of the grooves, the wedges offer very consistent spin rates on each shot, making it easy to predict exactly what each shot will do.

Feel:

Through the use of 8620 mild carbon steel, and the placement of the centre of gravity on the wedges, there’s an extremely soft feel and great sound.

New look:

Callaway says the look and finish of the MD5 makes them extremely attractive from all angles, regardless of whether you have the blade open or square to the target. The wedges with lofts from 46 to 52 degrees are slightly smaller than the wedges 54 degrees and up.

Bounce options:

There’s a new low-bounce W-grind in the line, which is the result of feedback from tour pros who wanted playability on chips, but also the ability to use the sole bounce on full shots. The C-grind allows for more versatility on a wide variety of shots.

Who are they for?

Callaway’s new MD5 wedges are ideal for the low to mid-handicap golfer who demands precision out of their scoring clubs. These wedges will especially appeal to the better golfer who anticipates what a well-struck shot will do and demands consistency from their wedges.
