Big Bertha—one of Callaway’s most iconic brands. But it is also a brand the company is always pushing forward, improving, tinkering with. It has been part of the driver and iron family–but is always focused on distance. Since 2014, when the Big Bertha name became part of the irons franchise for Callaway, the name has also been synonymous with new technology, which is exactly the case with their newest Big Bertha irons.
In 2014 it was 360 Face Cup. In 2016 it was EXO-Cage. Both were significant developments by Callaway. This year Callaway says its “Suspended Energy Core,” which the company says uses technology never previously seen in irons, is the ground-breaking concept behind the latest generation of Big Bertha irons.
Key Technologies
Suspended Energy Core
Using a metal injection molded tungsten floating weight, Callaway says Suspended Energy Core creates the best of sound and feel, and consistent distance. The suspended weight allows Callaway to position the centre of gravity deep in a three-piece iron, creating higher launch, and allowing for thinner faster clubfaces.
360 Face Cup
A staple of Callaway irons for the past four years, Face Cup is a flexible rim around the face that flexes and transfers more energy and ball speed. Callaway says this is its thinnest face cup to date, increasing ball speeds and launch angle.
Aesthetics
No one wants a game improvement iron that looks big and clunky. That’s why Callaway used what it is calling its “premium design,” on the Big Bertha, with a clean Smoked PVD finish.
Who is it for?
The 2019 version of Big Bertha irons is straight and even longer than previous versions, while still maintaining an optimal ball flight. If you’re a player seeking more distance, but still want to attack the green from an optimal height, Big Bertha might just be a great addition to your arsenal this year.
