Hugh Burrill – Golf Town Brand Ambassador
Doug Gilmour is getting ready to come out and play with a custom fitting experience from StudioX.
“Wow. They’ll let anybody in here.”
The man whose nickname is “Killer” laughs at my verbal jab and we share a quick hug. It’s been a while since our paths have crossed and it’s good to see him again.
Doug Gilmour is visiting Golf Town’s StudioX in Toronto for a custom fitting but first, there’s the obligatory Leafs chat with the former Captain and Hall of Famer turned team Ambassador.
He tells me that Mitch Marner should definitely be in the running for the Hart Trophy as Most Valuable Player and that the Leafs are poised to finally get past the first round for the first time in … well … a LONG time.
With the hockey talk out of the way, it was time to get fit. A process not unlike what he used to go through before hitting the ice. Like most professional athletes, Gilmour was very picky about his equipment.
“Skates and sticks were the most important thing for me. I liked my skates two sizes too small, but I had to have them tight. As for my stick, it was a straight stick, but it had my pattern. They’d give me ten or twelve at a time and I’d select maybe eight.” – Doug Gilmour, Leafs Captain 1994-97
After hitting dozens of shots under the watchful eye of Master Club Fitter Dustin Timlin and spending some time testing out different putters, it was decided Doug would be best served with a mixed bag.
“Here at StudioX we’re very brand agnostic. We’re not trying to pigeon-hole anyone into a certain brand. So, we ended up going Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist and Odyssey. We wanted to make sure that whatever Doug was getting into worked the best for him.” – Dustin Timlin, Master Club Fitter, StudioX
“The fitting was amazing. I’m a 12 or 14 handicap and the technology used here today was a real eye opener in terms of learning about what the club can do. I’m excited to get out there now and hopefully the game gets better.” – Doug Gilmour, 1414 career points
When Gilmour isn’t greeting Leaf fans and sponsors, or raising money for charity, he can be found on the fairways of Burlington Golf and Country Club where he’ll soon be putting his new “sticks” to the test.
“I can’t really say my game has been wonderful there, but the game is about just having fun. I could have a great round but I’m going to blow up on two holes no matter what. I’ll be chirped at if I don’t play better with these new clubs.” – Doug Gilmour, HHOF 2011
