2021 driver’s offer more forgiveness and greater speed

Every year, engineers make Superman drivers. Able to find more fairways! Hit it longer! Higher!

That’s what you get from the best in the business in 2021, whether it is TaylorMade’s revamped SIM2, Callaway’s Epic, powered by artificial intelligence, or Cobra’s driver, which has helped Bryson DeChambeau smash his way to the top.

Maybe during the pandemic last summer, you didn’t get the chance to update that driver in your bag. If that’s the case—or maybe you’re just looking for something new—we want to give you insights to assist in making a purchase easier, highlighting some of the most prominent new drivers on the market.

SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max.D Driver

A refinement of the original SIM driver saw all of the key elements from the original version tweaked to make improvements, and some new elements added.

The keys to the new SIM2—which is more forgiving than the original version—is the created of what the company calls “Forged Ring Construction.” Essentially it is an aluminum collar that connects the key elements of the driver—the carbon fiber crown, the sole and the face. The creation allowed engineers to move more discretionary weight to increase MOI or forgiveness on the driver.

Who is it for?

SIM2 Max: Forgiving. This is a fairway-seeker.

SIM2 Max.D: Draw-bias. If you slice the ball, think about this one.

G425 Max Driver & G425 SFT Driver

Ping’s goal has been the same for years—to make a driver that allows you to hit more fairways, but doesn’t spin too much and limits distance. In that regards, PING G425 is significantly more forgiving— 14% more, in fact—its previous drivers, a huge step forward for the company. Its SFT driver is for those seeking to fix that slice, while its Max is its main offering.

Who is it for?

G425 Max Driver: Forgiving and adjustable—perfect for most golfers.

G425 SFT Driver: Fixing a slice? This is for you.

ST-X Driver

A draw-biased driver that uses a carbon composite construction and is aided by a heel side sole weight. The result is a driver that will keep you from slicing the ball, but doesn’t look like the toe is turned in. It offers a slightly smaller profile than the ST-Z, and Mizuno suggests this isn’t what you might initially expect from a draw-bias driver.

Who is it for?

Yes, this is for those who struggle with a left-to-right ball flight, but the appearance of the ST-X might surprise some and the smaller head shape opens its appeal to a broader audience.

Cobra RADSPEED XD Driver and RADSPEED XB Driver

Cobra is a company whose history has seen them at the forefront of club innovation time and again and its latest driver—the RADSPEED—uses engineering advancement, and an extreme weighting formula to leverage faster ball speeds, greater forgiveness and towering trajectories.

COBRA has maximized the club’s radius of gyration, which ultimately means weight is pushed away from its centre of gravity, promoting greater inertia, lower spin and a higher launch angle.

Who are they for?

RADSPEED XD Driver— The RADSPEED XD promotes a draw ball flight, made possible by a 10g weight located at the heel.

RADSPEED XB Driver— The RADSPEED XB (stands for extreme back) is the more forgiving model, which will benefit players who need help keeping the ball airborne.

Callaway Epic Max and Epic Speed

A one-size-fits-all approach may be acceptable when selecting hats to wear on the course, but when it comes to drivers you need fine-tuned engineering targeted to help your individual swing.

Breakthrough technology provides the foundation for what the company believes is its fastest, most forgiving driver line to date. Callaway Epic Max is the company’s most forgiving driver release ever, delivering even greater MOI and effortless distance. Epic Max’s 17-gram perimeter weighting system allows golfers to dial in their shot shapes to help straighten out the wayward miss, while the significant draw-bias design mitigates slicing. If you’re looking to launch it higher, farther and straighter more often, you’ve found what Callaway believes is their most player-friendly model yet.

Who is it for?

Callaway Epic Max—For the golfer who wants to not only bomb it from the tee, but also find the fairway.

EPIC Speed—For those slower swingers seeking some extra distance.

Srixon ZX5

Using a speed-enhancing tech called “Rebound Frame,” the ZX5 pushes energy from the swing through the face for increased speed. The ZX5 is also known for its high launch angle (a key to big drives) that leads to significant carry distances. A single weight in the sole adds forgiveness to the model.

Who is it for?

Srixon has made headway in the driver space thanks to a British Open win by Shane Lowry, and the ZX5 is for the golfer looking for a higher ball flight that stays in the fairway.
