Spiking Performance

To spike, or not to spike—and no, we’re not talking about post-round Arnold Palmers.

adidas’ latest release ZG21 (standing for zero gravity), is the company’s next iteration of spiked performance footwear. But before you think clunky spiked shoes from bygone days when patterned cotton polos were all the rage, ZG21 are as sleek and modern as their spikeless counterparts, delivering a fresh face to a traditional sole and will be available online February 1.

It begins with BOOST, adidas’ signature cushion technology utilized across various footwear models developed the company for other sports. Ultra-soft, splendidly comfortable, while providing the stability the best players in the world demand on the course, Boost cushioning is, quite literally, the foundation of ZG21. In addition to its comforts, Boost also delivers significant energy return on each step, enabling you to save your exertion for when it matters most.

Complimenting Boost is adidas’ Lightstrike cushioning. First developed for the basketball court, this ultra-lightweight material contributes to ZG21 being nearly 20% lighter than adidas’ previous spiked footwear. Just below Lightstrike is where you’ll find ZG21’s traction system, consisting of six optimally located spikes to provide relentless stability in a variety of turf conditions.

After all, these shoes are all about performance, just ask Colin Morikawa or Xander Schauffele, two young all-stars who’ve already debuted the shoe on Tour.

Being a lightweight shoe with a modern aesthetic were qualities Masun Denison, adidas’ Global Footwear Director, believed were essential in delivering a truly reimagined spiked option for the discerning player. “We said, let’s take spiked to the next level by determining the problem areas,” said Denison. After further review, Denison and his team discovered spiked shoes were often synonymous as heavy, too traditional, and uncomfortable by many players, despite their comprising 40-45% of golf’s footwear market. To rectify this misbelief, adidas had a simple goal in mind—create a spiked shoe that looks sleek, is comfortable and light, without sacrificing performance. In other words, bring the versatility of spikeless footwear to ZG21. Sounds simple enough, but to pull it off required plenty of innovation.

“We want to be the most progressive golf brand— for us that means pushing the limits with innovation,” says Denison. And that they did. Innovation can be seen throughout the shoe, from its waterproof coated mesh upper to its new BOA closed-dial lace less system. And it’s not just the key tech features that break new ground, ZG21 is made from recycled materials, a nod to adidas’ focus on environmental sustainability.

Are they for me?

Available in men’s, women’s and junior sizing, ZG21 is a complete performance spiked option for every golfer. Not a fan of the lace less BOA system? Not a problem, ZG21 can also be purchased with laces if you so desire.
