Nike Air Max Day

Golf has always been the kind of sport where people can express themselves with their fashion choices, from tweed jackets and ties to plaid pants to white belts, vests, bucket hats, athleisure outfits, and out-there designs.

The Nike Air Max is turning heads on the golf course for all the right reasons – it’s one of the coolest shoes in golf.

In 2021 we have a ton of Air Max styles worth checking out. The shoes are not only great to look at and complimentary to so many different outfits, but they are chalk-full of great tech. Nike leans into its decades of industry-leading shoe design and research to apply the big-time comfort of the Air Max to the golf course.

The Air Max is an undeniable icon, and it’s been reimaged for the golf course in a variety of styles and colours the last few years.

Here’s everything you need to know about Nike’s can’t-miss kicks, available at Golf Town!

AIR MAX HISTORY

Nike Air Max day is celebrated annually on March 26, which marks the day Nike (originally called Blue Ribbon Sports) launched the Air Max 1. It was 1987 when the iconic brand dropped the first shoe that featured Air Max cushioning and had a ‘window’ in the heel of the shoe that allowed people to see what was going on under the hood.

Nike designer Tinker Hatfield cut that window in the midsole inspired by the open architecture of Paris, making the ‘air’ visible for the first time.

Fast-forward more than 30 years later and the Air Max hits the links with the Air Max 97 G, Air Max 90 G and Air Max 270. Nike decided to pivot some of its biggest shoe lines from performance to lifestyle to golf, with much success.

While the Air Max was long known as the perfect combination of comfort and performance for athletes, that vibe carried over to the golf course as well.

The Air technology is installed alongside integrated traction and a waterproof overlay, while the shoes boast some increased stability as compared to the same family of shoes that are meant for the streets and not the course.

 AIR MAX ON THE COURSE

While Nike has long been worn by Tiger Woods as part of the global brands’ laundry list of top athletes in a variety of sports, some of golf’s biggest names are leaning into the street style of the Air Max.

Even with the fun colours and distinguished style, Nike’s engineers have managed to make sure even the best golfers in the world get the traction they need to play their best.

Jason Day, formerly world No. 1 and a Nike athlete, is always seen wearing Air Max shoes – usually the Air Max 90 or Air Max 1. Tony Finau, who was in the final group on Sunday at the 2019 Masters alongside two other Nike athletes (Tiger Woods, who would go on to win – of course – and major champ Francesco Molinari) usually rocks the Air Max 270. That week he wore the Air Max 1.

The Air Max 1’s golf features include no-sew construction, a more flexible outsole, and added traction.

On the LPGA Tour you’ll see Lily Muni He modeling the Air Max 97, and Michelle Wie is often found on social media wearing Air Max shoes (usually matching her husband). Wie, another long-time Nike athlete, is set to return to the LPGA Tour this year after giving birth to her daughter in June of 2020.

Other notable Nike athletes who choose the Air Max include Cameron Champ – who wore one white and one black Air Max 97 to honour Black History Month, and his grandfather.

While  multi-time major champion Brooks Koepka is mostly known for the signature swagger he boasts from the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour that he helped design, he made headlines outside of the golf world by rocking a rare Nike x Off White Air Max 90. It was a 1-of-1 and prompted Kopeka to drop an all-time quote: “It’s fashion, bro.”
