When it comes to being loud and bold, Puma is one of the best in golf. Whether it’s flat-brim snapbacks, head-turning designs, or neon pants, the apparel giant is all about getting golfers to express themselves on the course.
“Game enjoyment” is the overarching philosophy behind the company’s latest collections, which promotes the idea that golf fashion should be like everyday fashion––something you put on to express yourself and feel comfortable wearing. Puma’s not interested in making golf “uniforms,” instead they strive to create clothing that embraces individuality.
“The golfer doesn’t need to have two separate looks or two different uniforms, a golfer’s style should be able to translate seamlessly between all of their activities,” says Kristin Hinze, Puma Golf’s Head of Merchandising.
With whimsical designs and bold patterns gracing the industry’s latest technical fabrics, the company that brought us Rickie Fowler’s button-up Hawaiian shirt is at it again in 2020.
Here’s what you can expect from Puma this year.
Tour-Inspired Prints
New this year is Puma’s extensive use of prints. By gathering design inspiration from PGA Tour stops, Puma will be releasing a collection of printed polos and hats that reflect the unique characteristics of each tournament location. At the Hero Challenge in the Bahamas we saw the turtle print, during Hawaii it was pineapples and palm trees, and for the Florida swing Puma gave us oranges and alligators. Rolling out over the course of the season, these collectable polos are bound to get even more interesting as the Tour works its way through the schedule. And yes, major championship stops will get in on the fun. Made from 95% polyester and 5% spandex, these funky polos are diaphanously soft, undeniably cool, and will certainly be the topic of many tee box conversations.
Praiseworthy Bottoms
Puma’s Jackpot shorts and pants have been a huge success for the brand since they were first introduced in 2019. The company says the pants are so comfortable that when you try them on it’ll feel like you hit the jackpot (did we mention Puma is bold?). Designed to be ultra-lightweight with moisture-wicking fabric, these bottoms are breathable, comfortable and modern in their cut. With five pockets and an interior waistline that utilizes a silicone adhesive for shirt tuck preservation, these bottoms also check the practicality box. Maybe the jackpot metaphor wasn’t an exaggeration after all.
Women’s PWRSHAPE
Puma has invested heavily in its women’s collection this year. After noticing the market failed to provide women with a pant that was moderate in style––think somewhere between solid khakis and technicolour florals––Puma worked to bridge the gap, unveiling its PWRSHAPE line.
By utilizing compression fabrics––not dissimilar to that of leggings––these modern golf pants and skorts provide a confident, familiar feel. Made with a bonded construction process that allows the fabric to be ultra-fine and highly durable, these pants are exceptionally soft and provide a responsive flexibility throughout the golf swing. PWRSHAPE has also done away with the button and zipper, instead implementing an elastic waistline for improved convenience and comfort.
“It gives a compressive feeling and a shaping effect, so it feels slimming and very, very comfortable,” says Hinze. And to top it off, literally, Puma’s latest Ombre Sleeveless Polo collection––available in nine colours––delivers a moisture-wicking garment that keeps you comfortable on the course in a variety of conditions. Look for these to hit Golf Town shelves soon. Whether its pants, skorts, shorts or shirts, Puma’s women’s collection is one of the finest in the industry.
Inspired by The King
After recently signing a three-year partnership agreement with Arnold Palmer Enterprises, Puma will be producing Arnold Palmer-inspired apparel in recognition of The King’s influence on the sport. The collection will be available on June 1, with a portion of the line’s proceeds going toward the Arnold and Winnie Palmer Foundation. Be sure to keep an eye out for this unique apparel at Golf Town to take part in a great look for an even greater cause.
