Abacus is coming back to Canada in a big way through Golf Town by making it easier to enjoy yourself in inclement conditions.
Abacus has a long history with the Solheim Cup, one that illustrates the success of its outerwear. The company provided outerwear for the European team through seven Solheim Cups. In each of those instances, when it rained, the American team took their jackets off to hit a shot while the Europeans were comfortable, leaving their jackets on when they went to hit a big shot. “That says a lot,” explains Sven-Olof Karlsson, the man behind the brand.
Abacus is one of those brands that is immediately recognizable in Europe, but not as readily known in Canada. It has offered its apparel in Canada previously, but exited the market, only to return with a significant presence in Golf Town. Capturing the upper mid-market by offering layering items and rain jackets with its own Scandinavian flare, the company has a technical story that’s hard to beat.
Product keys
Breathability
The key, says Alexandra Karlsson, the company’s marketing director, is the right mix of stretch, breathability, and weight that has few rivals. Abacus uses material that is extremely breathable. The company says many rain jackets tend to keep moisture off the golfer, but keep moisture in the jacket, making you wet as you sweat in warmer conditions. “Jackets using Gore-Tex are not nearly as breathable as ours,” says Sven-Olof Karlsson. “And the game is different things to different people—some are out there to have fun, some to shoot a good score. But one thing is common—they all want to be comfortable when swinging.”
Stretch
Functionality is where stretch comes into play. With two and four-way stretch, Abacus outerwear fits more closely than a lot of jackets, but the stretch makes it easy to move and hit the shot when you need to. The company also focuses on the details—rain pants can be readily trimmed to the right height because the company offers a couple of inches of extra material below the zipper on the pant leg.
Aesthetics
Abacus offers more than just outerwear. Polos and quarter-zips are part of the line, both for men and women. In fact, female golfers account for almost half of all sales, a testament to the mix of style and function found in the Abacus line. Golf Town carries both apparel from Abacus for all golfers. In terms of style, the company says its look is typically Scandinavian—clean and sporty. “It functions well and looks great,” says Alexandra. In terms of sizing, you’ll find Abacus fits similarly to typical Canadian fashions, though a Canadian medium is a large in the Scandinavian line.
Price Point
Abacus offers rainsuits at mid and upper-mid price points. Items like the company’s Pitch Rain Jacket uses 37.5 Technology, which keeps the body’s temperature at the ideal 37.5 Celsius. This makes these jackets, at a slightly higher price point, ideal for warmer Canadian summers.
