Top 19-11 Courses: Top 59 Canadian Golf Course Countdown

In celebration of SCOREGolf’s Top 59 Public Golf Courses Ranking, we recently hosted Canada’s Top 59 Golf Giveaway, where we gave away a foursome to every course on the list! With thousands of entries from coast-to-coast, we want to thank everyone that entered and congratulate all of our winners.

When SCOREGolf first launched its Top List in 2013, they chose 59 to coincide with golf’s coveted score, which had been carded at the game’s highest levels only a few times. Despite Jim Furyk coming along and bettering the score when he shot a 58 in 2016, the list remains the same size this year.

Using a rating scale that measures beauty, strategy, challenge, design, conditioning, Par 3s, Par 4s, Par 5s and fun factor, below is the Top 59 Public Golf Courses in Canada in 2017.

Check out our previous posts in the countdown:

19. Eagles Nest

Eagles Nest Golf Club
Maple, Ontario

Constructed from a sand and gravel pit next to a former landfill site, Doug Carrick’s Eagles Nest is a masterpiece creation. With holes cut through fescue-filled, man-made dunes and nasty waste bunkers throughout, Eagles Nest is a sturdy test, especially when the wind picks up.

Built on bench land high above Kelowna, Tom McBroom’s Tower Ranch drops hundreds of feet over its 18 holes, putting golfers high above fairways on many tee decks. Its vistas extend for miles from start to finish, and some superb holes on the back nine ensure an excellent finish.

Big Sky continues to rank very high on SCOREGolf’s best-public list and for good reason. Designed by the late Bob Cupp, it sits in a mountain valley and boasts a wonderful routing. Its straightforwardness and setting make it the favourite of many in and around Whistler.

Winner: Troy Disipio

The Ridge at Manitou may have the prettiest 18th hole in Canada. A relatively short par 5, golfers crest a hill halfway to the green and are presented with an unobstructed view of the spectacular Manitouwabing Lake. It’s a lasting memory of a wonderful golf course.

Winner: Priscillia Durocher

15. The Links at Crowbush Cove

The Links at Crowbush Cove

Long an Atlantic Canada staple, Thomas McBroom’s Links at Crowbush Cove once again cracks the top 15 on SCOREGolf’s Top 59 Best Public Courses list. The seaside beauty is one of the most enjoyable layouts in the country.

14. Fairmont Chateau Whistler

13. Osprey Valley Resort — Hoot Course

Osprey Valley Resort — Hoot Course
Calendon, Ontario

Osprey Valley can rightly lay claim to being Canada’s best 54-hole facility with three courses on SCOREGolf’s Top 59. Its wastelands-style Hoot Course, however, is its best. Doug Carrick says he designed it in homage to Pine Valley, regarded by most as the world’s best golf course.

Winner: Sylvain Boisvert

12. Rocky Crest

Rocky Crest
Mactier, Ontario

Thomas McBroom’s Rocky Crest was a trailblazer of sorts. It was the first course in Ontario’s Muskoka region to make use of the Canadian Shield, with fairways cut through exposed rock giving golfers something they had never seen before. It continues to be one of Canada’s best.

Winner: Sylvie Desrochers

11. Tobiano

Tobiano Resort
Kamloops, British Columbia

It’s not on the ocean or at the base of massive mountains, but Thomas McBroom’s Tobiano nonetheless remains one of the most visually spectacular courses in Canada. In the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert and overlooking Kamloops Lake, some have equated playing Tobiano with playing golf on the moon. Holes run both through and across valleys bordered by dunes.

Winner:  Craig Goetz
