It’s been a long wait for three of Canada’s promising young golf talents.
In 2019, Anna Wu, Alexis Card and Cole Roberts qualified for the then upcoming Drive, Chip and Putt Championship, scheduled to take place a week before the 2020 Masters. But as we all know, things didn’t exactly unfold according to plan, and the Masters, along with virtually every other golf tournament, was cancelled until further notice.
At last, the trio are set to make their long awaited trip down Magnolia Lane to compete for one of junior golf’s most celebrated events.
The Format
Yes, you’ve guessed correctly, the event consists of driving, chipping and putting. Each participant hits three shots from each category, which are scored using a point system. The overall winner from each division is the player with the highest score. With only nine shots to play, each swing carries a bit of added pressure.
Canadian Contenders
Anna Wu
Anna Wu is competing in the 7-9 age group and hails from Victoria, B.C. She worked her way through qualifying south of the border at three sites in the State of Washington, culminating at Chambers Bay, site of the 2015 U.S. Open. Her home course is Royal Colwood Golf Club, where she began playing golf at the age of six. Needless to say, she’s gotten pretty good in a short period of time. She says her favourite part of the game is driving, which is also her favourite area of the game to practice. Good luck to Anna! We’ll be cheering you on from north of the border.
Cole Roberts
Cole is heading down to Augusta from his home in Oshawa, Ont. After qualifying for the big show at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, the young golfer hopes to clinch victory in the 7-9 age division. He may just be starting out his golfing career, but Cole already understands lots about the game. When asked what’s the hardest part about golf, he said it was “hitting the ball straight.” Truer words have never been spoken. Cole also said that putting is his strongest skill on the course, so let’s hope he can drain a couple long ones and take home the win!
Alexis Card
Another Ontarian teeing it up is Alexis Card, who qualified for the main event at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Alexis is from Cambridge, playing golf at Galt Country Club with her brother Brayden. In addition to winning the U.S. Kids Golf 2017 and 2018 Canadian Invitational, Alexis took home the trophy at the U.S. Kids Golf 2018 Pennsylvania State Invitational, following it up with a 7th place finish at the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship. Competing in the 7-9 age group, we’ll be rooting her on as she shows her skills off at Augusta.
The Drive, Chip and Putt Championship takes place on Sunday, April 4 from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA.
