Strategy and challenge of Canada’s Top 100 Courses

SCOREGolf has long been known for its rankings of Canadian Golf Courses, and we are happy to announce we will be partnering as the presenting sponsor of this year’s Top 100 Golf Courses in Canada list, hitting newsstands at the end of July.

SCOREGolf’s panellists use a rating scale that measures criteria such as beauty, strategy, challenge, design, Par 3s/4s/5s, conditioning, and of course, fun factor. As we lead up to the 2018 list being released later this month, let’s take a deeper look at some of the factors.

Strategy

The best courses ask golfers to think creatively about how they will attack each fairway and green. Is there both an aggressive and conservative route to the pin? Do both high and low handicappers have a fair chance to score? That’s the basis for Strategy, which accounts for 15 per cent of the course’s total grade in SCOREGolf’s Top 100 ranking.

Challenge

Challenge accounts for 15 per cent of a course’s total score, but what does “challenge” really mean? Not an unnecessarily difficult golf course, that’s for sure. Instead, striking the balance between rewarding good shots and penalizing bad shots earns high marks from SCOREGolf’s Top 100 raters.

Par 3s, 4s and 5s

Each par set is broken down individually — accounting for 5 per cent each of the total ranking — with grades given for diversity in looks, lengths and shot demand. Ultimately, each of these types of holes is designed to inspire golfers to think creatively with their shot selection.

We’re almost there! Next week, we’ll release the full Top 100 List! Stayed tuned to see how you could win a foursome to one of the top courses in Canada!

  1. Disappointed that you did not provide a PDF of the actual listing of these 100 courses. Easily done. If its here, its hidden quite well.

Actually makes me think to avoid your organization. Poorly done this release.
