Six things to love about fall golf

Fall is here. In many parts of the country temperatures are beginning to drop and the leaves are beginning to change. But this doesn’t mean your season has to end. After all, there is plenty to be excited about for fall golf.

Here are six reasons to extend your season into the fall.

1. Availability
Lora Bay, Thornbury, Ontario

A lot of golf courses slow after Labour Day as many casual golfers put their clubs away. But the serious golfer can benefit from this with easier access to the tee sheet, and faster rounds.

2. Layering

Once upon a time, when the weather cooled golfers were forced into bulky clothing to keep them warm, which made it difficult to swing. Not any longer. Clothing companies have created numerous layering concepts that keep you warm when you’re out on the course, move with your body, and that can be taken off if the day heats up. No longer is a 10-degree day going to make you cancel your tee time.

3. Fall colours

Golf courses are at their most picturesque in the fall. As trees change in September and October, golf courses come alive with vibrant colours.

4. Play for less
Humber Valley,  Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador.

As demand slows later in the year, often courses offer incentives to get players out on their courses. While twilight golfers need to sneak out earlier, a lot of clubs offer two-for-one and discounted fall rates as the weather starts to cool.

5. Consider “fall golf” rules

Soon enough many golf courses will be covered in falling leaves, meaning a wayward shot in the rough can simply disappear. While it can be frustrating, many simply look past the official rules of the game and just play it near where the ball disappeared. Truthfully it makes the game more enjoyable and speeds up play since you’re not searching under every fallen leaf for a ball on every second hole.

6. New toys

This fall has seen some exciting club launches from the biggest names in golf. Whether it’s Titleist’s new TSR metalwoods, wedges from TaylorMade, irons from Mizuno or putters from PING, there is plenty of new clubs to add to your bag this season.

  1. Fall is my favorite season for golf. Getting out on a Sunday afternoon when the NFL is on is great. Half the time, I have the entire course to myself! Come fall, I also like to use my Vice Pro yellow golf balls as I can see it better in the rough with the leaves on the ground than my usual white ball. Does anyone else pull out the colored golf balls come fall?
