With 47 stores across Canada we have a wide range of expert staff from different walks of life. Regardless of their background, beliefs or heritage everyone has one common link that unites them all together, their love for the game of golf.
In this week’s Associate Spotlight, we feature Katelin Lawson, an associate at our Windsor location that has been playing golf since the age of three. She owes her love for the game and success in the sport to her brother who practiced with her and turned her into the golfer she is today.
Katelin Lawson – Golf Town Windsor
When did you start playing golf? Early?
Probably not as early as Katelin Lawson who first picked up a club at the age of three. THREE!
Now 23, Katelin gives a lot of the credit for her success in golf to her older brother, Justin.
“My brother would actually teach me at the side of the house. That’s why I’m actually right-handed because I write left-handed and then I swing right. So he taught me at the age of three and I started taking lessons at about 7 years old and then I got into tournaments at nine.”
It wasn’t long until Katelin was winning most of those tournaments in and around her hometown of LaSalle, Ontario. By the time high school came around, it was obvious her talent needed a bigger stage. So her family packed up and moved to central Florida so Katelin could play year-round. A move that she initially wasn’t crazy about.
“At first I didn’t want to go but then I realized I’m in Florida. Disney is just down the road and I can golf all year ‘round, so it was great.”
After high school, Katelin spent a year at the University of Tampa but soon jumped at the chance to move back closer to home and attend Eastern Michigan. Her collegiate career took off like a Bryson DeChambeau drive, leading the Eagles to two of their best three four-person season scoring averages.
Katelin also excelled in the classroom as a three time All-American Scholar studying Criminology.
Now back home, Katelin brings her passion for golf to work every single day.
“I love being around golf all day. Love being able to talk about it. It’s something that I know and something I love to share with people.”
Windsor General Manager Marisa Ellison jumped at the opportunity to hire a talent like Katelin.
“She has such a phenomenal work ethic. She’s always been a go-getter from day one. She always wants to learn the next step of whatever she’s working on whether it’s club fitting, product knowledge or operationally.”
Katelin isn’t sure what her future holds. She might get into teaching the game or she might continue to play competitively. But she does know this: golf will continue to be a big part of her life, just as it’s been for the past 20-years.
